    Infant Gaviscon

    Hello Everyone!

Just took my little one to the doctors today, as we thought she may have Silent Reflux - doc has put her on Infant Gaviscon for the next 7 days, if that dosent work i have too take her back and he may try her on something stronger.
I was just wondering has anyone else had their bub on Infant Gaviscon at such a young age?
    Did it work?
and if so how long did it take too work?

WE found the Infant Gaviscon worked quite well WHEN we could get it into her! My DD was breastfed and the challenge of getting her to drink it out of a medicine cup/syringe was just too much in the end. Dr then put her on Zantac which worked a treat.

    Hi Rainbow girl

For breastfed bubs- make it up into a paste and give it after each feed (dose depends on how big they are).

For bottlefed bubs- Mix it into the bottle and again give with each feed I think (Depending on the dose, it will need to be mixed in either at least 115 mls, or 225 mls of their bottle).

Rainbow, as far as I know (this is what we did), try a couple of minutes before the feed, and we didn't go every feed - bub tended to chuck more in the morning, so we found we could get away without it at nights. So you will know your bub well in that regard.
You also know that you give far less than the adult dose? If you haven't seen a doc, that could be a good idea, just to make sure you're on the right track.

HJ - We're using it currently (DD is 7 weeks) and it's definitely safe for your baby to have at their age.

It is not absorbed into their bloodstream - it simply acts to thicken the contents of their stomach, thus stopping it from being regurgitated so easily. And once the regurgitation eases, this also helps to settle the stomach, further reducing the irritation.

It certainly has helped, especially from the point of view of stopping the amount of regurgitating she does, but I suspect on reflection that DD's symptoms are fairly mild, and her episodes may be related to food I've eaten. I found it had an impact almost immediately - i.e. one or two feeds, and I was told to expect it to work in 24-48 hours at the longest.

I've been experimenting with smaller doses and alternating/skipping feeds and am considering stopping it as one thing I can say has happened is it has altered DD stools dramatically. She doesn't have constipation as such, but has gone from 6+ motions a day (mustard, liquid BF poos) to 1-2 pasty (but soft) green motions. She is straining a great deal to open her bowels also.

Can I ask (sorry to hijack, HJ) what other BF mums have found happens to bubs bowels when on the Gaviscon? I've posted a thread asking a similar question a couple of days ago, if anyone is able to help. Thanks!

I'd say she just hasn't updated her ticker yet hj1981.

Rainbow, what exactly is the issue with bub? Is it reflux or do you think it's wind? My #2 was a really colicky/windy baby, but it's a different ball game to reflux/spewiness.
