So for all those that read my woo hoo thread not long ago about my mystical sleeping baby, I'm sure you won't be surprised to know my smugness has come back to bite me on the proverbial.
DD3 has turned into a screaming banshee for a couple of hours at a time (occasionally longer), multiple times a day. She will fuss at the breast - coming off and on but seemingly happy neither on or off (if he isn't unsettled at the time then she will feed without any of this behaviour and will contentedly feed to sleep). She will scream and be very difficult to settle (only success is by pacing the floor with her and getting the jiggle just right). She is obviously having tummy pain because her gorgeous little face contorts and her tummy goes rigid. You can also hear the whirring in her tummy and she has lots of pain until she can do a poo. She does vomit but seems to be a happy chucker at this point. I have a bassinet thing on the pram and she used to like being in there and would doze off but now the only way she settles in the pram is if I put her in there when she is already in a very deep sleep. She sleeps with us most nights though and is perfectly happy lying flat on her back in our bed.
So, what am I dealing with here? Is it just normal 3 week old baby behaviour, wind issues or the start of reflux? You'd think having had two babies already with reflux and intolerance issues this wouldn't be difficult for me to work out, but Miss I and E were so incredibly distressed almost from birth and for 20 odd hours a day, every day, which is nothing like what Miss A is showing. I feel that I'm maybe overthinking it because I'm half expecting her to have the same severe problems her sisters had, so wonder if I'm looking for something that isn't there IYKWIM.
There are lots of possibilities and it could just be a developmental thing.
Have you ever consulted with Joy Anderson? She's an LC and dietician and speicalises in children's allergies and intolerances. Might be worth a chat.
I have dd2 in chiro trying to naturally treat what seems to be reflux, today after 15hrs strait crying yesterday the chiroasks how long her belly has been hard i said a few days i think she is full of milk despite the breast refusal she said no shes backed up, rub her belly in a clockwise direction a few times a day when its this hard, she did it & bub proceeded to do a huge poo as we drove away followed by a huge feed when we pulled up. I wont say shes a new baby but shes happier. Maybe try that & see if she just needs a big release lol
Just reading your post, I could identify with some of what you're saying. I took DD to her 8 wk checkup today and she did a chucky spew when I was getting her undressed. The health nurse asked if this was common and said that she thought it could be a form of reflux. Our first son had reflux and screamed blue murder for 6 months, so I didn't think too much of DD's vomits b/c they weren't making her too unhappy - just sometimes at nighttime. health nurse said that here are different degrees of reflux.
Not sure what's going on with your little one, given they sleep on their back fine and seems to be a happy chucker.
The only thing I can think of, (which has helped all 3 of our kids) is to try going off dairy and see if this helps. We noticed with DS2 that he would pull his legs up to his chest and scream and come off a feed after 2 mins and had lots of wind (that we could never get up) and had a lot of pain. About 4 or 5 days after cutting all dairy, he stopped vomiting so much, stayed on for feeds and wasn't so unsettled.
If only they could tell us what's going on!
I can empathise with the pacing and holding/rocking/jigging. We tend to alternate between good nights and shocking nights at the moment.
I hope you can work out what's going on for your DD.
Turned out to be wind and colic. She got progressively worse with the colic but touch wood, that has really settled now. She still gets lots of wind pains, but now its normally just early morning - it will wake her and she'll squirm and squawk until she lets enough farts out. I'm hoping once she's mobile that will start to disappear.
The Brauers colic relief worked best - might be worth giving it a shot with your little man if you haven't already
