reflux medication is not always a bad thing

I often come on here and read the threads but don't always reply, as lady suggested in another thread that i reply ed to she hasn't seen me on here for a while.

There are so many posts on all the reflux threads about avoiding medication and I choose not to medicate etc, but in some cases and I'm not saying all but in some there is a NEED for medication and medical intervention and its not a bad thing yes we all hate giving our babies medication but if there is a choice between medication and and my a child screaming there heads of whilst there stomach acid (which is as Strong as battery acid) is burning the lining of there oesophagus and throat and a larynx i know which one i would choose. Reflux is not just about a baby pukeing and as we all know it does hurt, it can also cause major problems and damage to the oesophagus, reflux can also be responsible for a FTT and development delays and feed refusal, chest infections and chronic lung disease due to continuous aspiration, it can also cause problems with the ears which in tern can affect there speech.

I'm not saying the every child that has reflux needs medication I just wanted to let people know that some times it is needed and we have no choice it doesn't mean you have failed or that your doing some thing wrong, its life reflux sucks so if there is something that you can give them to ease there pain and suffering it not always a bad option

    My dd is on
losec and zantac and domperadone and she has also been on zoton and nexium and is 100 percent tube and has had anti reflux surgery and before i had my DD i was somewhat anti medical intervention but like i said we all as mums do the best we can for our babies

Reflux isn't just something all babies do it can be a serious illness and can cause life long complications

Hugs to all reflux mums yes its hard and it sucks, we all do our bests as mums its all we can do

i absolutely agree whole heartedly with your post, and i want to give you a big hug, its certainly not easy having a refluxer especially your poor little treasure. I am still medicating Archie, as when i try weaning him off Losec he can't sleep and he spews little bits constantly throughout the day. I would much rather have a happy comfortable baby who is medicated than a miserable stressed sleepless baby who is in constant pain.

    Thank you thank you thankyou!

I read the posts about "wonder" drops and info on other parenting sites but there is nothing that has worked for us except Losec, 20mg tab / day, and a combination of infant gaviscon and mylanta, plus infacol for when he just wouldn't bring up wind bocs of the pain.

Jake is a silent refluxer and the number of people who have said "what!?!?! he doesn't have reflux I have never seen him throw up...". aaaaarrrrrggghhh!!!!!

We tried to wean him off the drugs at about 6months to no avail - the screaming days nights and feeds were back. My GP said basically the same thing as you - the meds are there for a reason and you are not a failure for having to use it.

    *sigh*

I agree too. If I thought my child needed it I would use it. I cant stand to see my baby in pain. Do what you have to do as serious reflux can be dangerous. Dont mess with it.

I agree totally as you know, I do understand that it is hard for people to get that there can be such varying degrees of reflux, but because your child needs medication isn't a failure, it is actually very hard to get a doctor to beleive you enough to get these medications. I have fought long and hard on the decision to mediacate Parker but at the end of the day it is something that needs to be done.

It shouldn't be something you are worried to tell someone about either so that you are judged. The bad thing is that on medicine a lot of the time your child seems perfectly normal and the most frustrating thing is having people say that there is nothing wrong cause he seems fine.

Like you know we weaned Parker in Jan and we put him back on it in May because the symptoms were just getting worse and worse. Anyway I was doing the home videos of Parker the other day and there was about 10 minutes of me trying to get him to take the losec tablet, he did really well for about 3 days and then nothing, so I put him in his cot and he was whining and saying mummy I wan't to come out, and I was saying no not until you have your medicine.

But in that time he refluxed, gagged and coughed about 30 times, he was gurgly and irritable and to look at him now so totally different now he is back on the medicine, both Dan and I had tears in our eyes thinking that he had got that bad and because it was a slow progression we hadn't seen it.

Losec saved my sons life, that is not a statement I make for fun, but it is the truth, without it, he would be so very, very sick.

Parker is three tomorrow, I have been told by his GI that he will not grow out of reflux if he has it past three, it is a very slim chance, I am having difficulty with this, as I was when he was 1 and 2, since I think for the rest of our lives I am goign to have to be justifying our decisions to medicate him Hopefully he won't need to always be on such a high dose, but we will do what we have to do to get it done.

    Thanks Amy

    oh girls *hugs*

I have to say I agree. Matilda was medicated because we had too, and in fact in hindsight now, I wish we had medicated her further. I'm sorry I listened to my GP and stopped the meds. I've posted some of her story in the childrens medical conditions... and I can't believe I ignored stuff for so long.
