    Reflux - is this normal?

    Hi there,

We were prescribed zantac (.8mls) and also told to use gaviscon twice a day (1/2 sachet). This was last Wednesday. We initially saw a lot of improvement and DS back to demand bottles (EBM) every 2 hours were previously he was off his food because of pain but he was hungry. Today 5 days later we are experiencing him being off his food again, wanting his bottle but in pain when he tries to drink.

Is it possible this is just a bad day? Are there some bad days even when medicated or do you think this is indicative of his medication needing adjustment?

I'm feeling really down at the moment as I thought we were just getting on top of the feeding issues.

Lisa-Ella has a day here and there like that and it is usually wind a lot of babies with reflux suffer colic or bad wind because of the gulping they do we had a bad day yesterday with wind pain i am not sure if it's cause she has had bad watery poo's since her needles and she is just a bit unwell or it was just bad wind but OMG! was she a nightmare she is still sleeping well when asleep where before she was on zantac she woke constantly from regurgatating stomach contents so i know it's not the reflux she is upset from.

Am I reading your signature correctly - is your DS only 2-3 months old? if this is so, I don't think you should be using gaviscon AT ALL. The reason I say this is because DS has reflux and the MCHN nurse told us to get him gaviscon. So, I sent DH out at 8pm when he got home - he went to the chemist and luckily it was the pharmacist who assisted him and told him NEVER give gaviscon to an infant without speaking to a GP. It can sit like a hard ball in their little tummies and block their digestive system (or something like that). The next day I went to the GP and she confirmed - never give gaviscon to an infant - it's an outdated practice. You try zantac and if that doesn't work you go to losec. You need to have your baby checked out - he may be very uncomfortable and blocked. What type of doctor recommended the gaviscon?

Hi, my DD had bad reflux, and I've talked to lots of other reflux mums online and I would say that it is very normal for them to still have bad days. Even on medication sometimes things aren't fully controlled. I'd see how it goes for a few days, it's possible the medication needs increasing, but it could just be a random bad day.

And we used gavison infant heaps and heaps, as far as I'm aware most reflux mums I talked to did to some degree, so personally I wouldn't panic about that. Ours was prescribed by our doctor. It can make some babies constipated, so just watch out for that. IME it usually takes over a week before that can start though. It is not like adult gaviscon, it's basically a thickener, which makes the milk less likely to come back up.

Has he had a growth spurt? The amounts may need to be adjusted. Gaviscon is ok to use if your gp recommends it, it is a thickener so will help stop the vomiting.

Buliej - the paediatrician recommended infant gaviscon and yes my DS is 8 weeks old. I was told to give it differently to the directions on the back of the pack so I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not. I was told to give 1/2 sachet in 10mls of EBM prior to a feed 2-3 times a day.

Kiwimummy - I was told to use the infant gaviscon each day. So far DS hasn't been constipated but he usually poos every 5-6 days. Actually his poos have been more firmer so I will try and keep an eye on this.

Sounds just like DD2...she's 3 weeks old and on Losec but is constantly in horrible pain. Her breath smells of bile and when she vomits up a bit of acid, it burns her cheeks were it runs out her mouth.

She also does the painful feeding thing....gets so hungry and wants to eat but can hardly do so becuase she's crying and screaming. Wind is very easy to get out of her, but the reflux is horrible.

Gaviscon is fine, our GP said it was ok to use it, we could either use a reduced amount of the adult suspension or the satchels mixed up with water.

DD2 is on Losec twice daily (10mg per dose) and Gaviscon with every daytime feed, because if we don't she won't keep any milk down. But the Gaviscon is just a thickener hopefully weighing down the milk a bit more to keep it is side, although DD2 is getting quite constipated from it so we have to use Coloxyl drops to get her moving again, but as we are moving into solids a bit we are trying to give her foods that help keep the bowels moving. Poor Poppet was very constipated over the weekend and was very upset couldn't get it out, but eventually did last night and is a much happier baby
