Wind pain... how can you tell?

Hi all,

I feel terrible for having to ask this, but how can you tell if your baby is having wind pain? DD gets terribly unsettled and cries a LOT after some feeds and shows signs of hunger but she can't actually finish her bottles and DH thinks its wind but we don't actually know.

We asked our MCHN and she didn't answer (helpful huh?).

What happens when you burp her? Sometimes ours will scrunch abs up, like do ab curls, and push food away then pull it back.

Firstly hugs. It's so hard to tell bub to bub. Our son will arch his back and while I am trying to burp him he makes a certain cry (I notice it only with wind at this time) he continues with this cry until a burp comes up. While I am holding him to burp he swurmes a lot.

I hope it settles for you soon. We also found infants friend helped alot!

Oh yeah, the different cry! If you look at you tube ("dunstan baby language") a lady worked out 5 different types of cries that babies make. We could distinguish 3 of them with my bub, i was good with "Neh" (hunger), but the other 2 were similar. DH could pick the 3 of them, and one of these was meant to represent wind. (i think one was 'in need to burp' and the other was 'i neeed to fart'). it wasn't that long ago but you forget stuff

Arching the back, pulling up the knees, squirming... Some people say you can see a blue/purple ring around their lips, DD used to be a bit like a cat playing - she would pull the nipple to her mouth but push it away at the same time with her hands itms...
The repeat feeding/crying thing is often a clue - if they keep feeding a little stopping to cry and twisting, but then feeding again and pulling off...

I got the Dunstan baby language DVD and it was like a revelation. Amazing to hear the different cries. You can get it from your local library as it's quite expensive to buy.

I might check out the Dunstan baby language thing. Looked it up to buy but I'm not going to fork out $40 for it. Why is it that all you need to do is attach the the word 'baby' to something and you can seemingly charge a fortune for it? Was going to head to the library anyway later as I wanted to read some other parenting related books (that cost a fortune to buy - hence previous comment! ) so I will look for it I think.

Usually when we're burping her she's just sat there with her eyes wide open or she falls asleep. We don't get any writhing, twisting, scrunching herself up up... nothing.

Speaking of which... little miss is awake and wants feeding!

mainly I seem to notice pulling knees up and his tongue on the roof of his mouth.
U will notice a difference with her cries but sometimes with some babies its hard to tell.
if u think its wind u could always try something like gripe water or infants friend it can help some babies. I used gripe water with Flynn and I have noticed the difference already

DD doesn't burp at all.. The nurses in SCN used to get frustrated like me with her.

She may do a few burps an hour after feeds, but mostly just does big farts. :-)

Its so hard because she won't burp, but clearly has a belly ache.

pulling the knees up is a big indicator of wind pain, and both my boys get the blueness down the sides of their noses when they got wind

Kaidyn majority of the time burps but i found "Infants Friend" to work absolute wonders

DD wasn't a burper either, but persist.
IT will still help reduce the severity of the pains, and also help prevent reflux.

DS definitely has a different cry, often his tongue is glued to the roof of his mouth. He either scrunches forward into a ball or arches back and goes all stiff with his little legs straight out. He particularly goes "coco bananas" as we call it and makes this crazy sound repeatedly and shakes his little mouth across the nipple without taking it, unless he takes it very briefly and then goes straight back to unsettled and crying. He'll also hold his breath as he tries to push the wind out.

We use the Brauers colic relief as it was recommended for premmies.. works well and if he gets a bad bout we can give him some more at the time.

My naturopath recommends drinking chamomile tea as it helps them relax, and I have found that useful too.

DS wasn't a burper either but he's onto it now. It will happen in time.

I've never heard of Brauers colic relief. How soon can you use it?? DD is 7 weeks 2 days old, or 1 week 3 days past her due date.

I've also had DD crying so I try to stick her on the boob and she just shakes her mouth over it and she won't suck properly, just get off and cry.

You're welcome Charlotte, DS was using it at about 7 weeks, but he wasn't at his due date yet.. the pharmacist said it was the best choice for a young premmie baby. Hope it helps.

wow these are all helpful. i knew about the blue lips. but i was baffled as to why DS would shake his head like crazy trying to get to his bottle but then push it away. now i know to keep trying to burp him
