we did it for the first 12 months.
first she was swaddled in a wrap to sleep (on top of the doona for winter, on top of sheet for summer, and well down the bed, nowhere near my pillow.
after the swaddling, she was in a very thin cotton sleeping bag (on top of the doona for winter, on top of sheet for summer, and well down the bed, nowhere near my pillow. based on the SIDS info.
fleece sleeping bags made her sweat like crazy. i have now discovered you can get cotton sleeping bags at best n less and also big w, for about $12. I have a "hot" baby, and she sleeps in them all year round now (there are sleeveless and long sleeve types). we live in a moderate climate.
i love the sleeping bags, she can't kick them off, stays covered all night. In winter when she has socks on underneath, if she kicks them off, they stay in the sleeping bag.
He was a hot baby, in summer he would wear a nappy and singlet but I would keep a light blanket handy for 3am when I would find him down the bed outside the covers. and in winter he would wear a singlet and onesie to bed and have a thicker blanket on call. DS2 is a cold baby and he wears 2 layers more then me (its winter here) and in summer he wore a light onesie. We also have tried sleeping bags on top of the doona/sheet, worked really well when he was younger but at the moment hes going through a "I must sleep on top of mum or not at all" stage haha
