I actually have a single bed set up in DS's room with a guard rail on the side. I sleep in there with him for the second part of the night (once I get sick of getting up and resettling him in the cot). I'm not sure about how to remove one side of the cot - I would be worried about a gap too. I look forward to hearing what others have to say.

I was worried about the same thing, so we just put out matteress on the floor with the cot matteress right next to my side and theres no gap.

But you could try putting a rolled up blanket in the gap or a body pillow??

    Hope that helps!
