Is it time for 1 day sleep for nearly 10mth old? Need advice

In the past, my bub would go to sleep within 5 minutes after three hours awake on the dot. He was having two sleeps per day at about 9.30 and 1.30pm.

Before that he was having three sleeps a day - after 2hours sleep on the dot.

In the last week or so all routine has gone flying out the window. Some days he is only having 1 sleep per day.

Today he woke up at 8.30am (very ususual!) and only just went back to sleep (2pm). It was like he was holding out for 2pm breastfeed!

Yesterday he only had 1 sleep at around noon! (He had been up since 6.30am) That was nearly 5 hours awake like today. But last night he went straight to sleep at 8pm. Woke for a quick feed at 2am. Then slept through to 8.30am. That was the best sleep he has had overnight for about 3 months!

I thought nearly 10months was way too early to move to one day sleep. Especially being awake for about 5 hours - a big jump from 3 hours on the dot! He isn't whinging though and if I try to put him to sleep earlier he will not have a bar of it! It is a complete waste of time.

When did your bub move to one day sleep? Do you think that is what my bub is asking for? Was it a coincidence that he nightsleep last night was the best for a long time?

I would love to hear what your bub did or chip in with your thoughts!

My twins are younger than yours ( 8 months ) but I totally understand what you are saying. Sometimes mine have 3 sleeps a day and then other days only 2. I do nothing different, but find it really had to understand why one day they can only stay up for 1 1/2 hours and the next day they are up for 3 hours straight.

For example one day they will get up at 7am back for a nap at 9am, then they sleep to 12 then back to bed at 3pm then back up at 5pm then to bed for the night at 8pm.
The next day they will get up between 6- 7am back to bed after only being up for 1 1/2 hours back up around 10.30am back down between 12-1 back up around 3pm down again between 5-6 then up around 7pm and to bed for the night around 8.30pm.

I am hoping by the time mine get to 10 months they will be on 2 sleeps every day, I don't think mine have a chance of being on 1 a day but you never know.

At 7 months my bub was like your twins - going between 2 and 3 sleeps per day too! He was up for around 2 - 2.5hours then. Then he moved to 3 hrs on the dot by 8 months. Now he is nearly 10 months and who knows what he is up to.

Personally, my ds still has two day sleeps- his up time is capped at 4 hours max. That works for us.

But, if one day sleep is working for you guys- like you said, bubs is not whingy and sleeps well at night, then go for it. All babies are different. You're the mum, you know what's right

They have been like this for about the last fortnight, I think from what you are saying they are trying to drop a sleep but they aren't quiet there yet.

DD has been down to 1 sleep from about 9-10 months .
I find i stretch her out in the morning and she goes down after lunch for 3-4 hrs.

I found it was time to go from 2 to 1 when she was not at all tired late at night. so slowly by slowly would fill her mornign with activites and she woul dbe ready for a good sleep in the arvos.

I did the same as PP, Julia used to get up at 7am miss her morning sleep so I would put her to bed straight after lunch. She still goes to bed for her 1 day sleep around 12.30 now and sleeps til 3pm every day. I also put my 5 1/2 month old to sleep at the same time and they sleep together in the same room until the same time its bliss. If I dont put Julia down after lunch for her day sleep she gets really cranky by 5pm. About every fortnight she doesnt have a day sleep for one day then it all goes back to normal.

    Hi there,

I just came on here intending to post about my 9 month old only having one daytime nap, and wanting to know if that was "normal" or supposed to be a problem for any reason. DD has been doing this for a couple of months now. Sometimes she will have 2 naps, but then she is not tired enough to go to sleep at night until late - usually around 10pm. Whereas 8pm is around the time she will go to sleep at night if she has only had one daytime nap.

Nice to know there are others out there... :-)

    Hiya!

We are going therough the same thing. I have been putting it down to teething, having people here, that kinda thing. Yesterday I took him into bed at 10.30am and we stayed there for an hour before he fell asleep. Today I took him into bed at 10.30 and he went to sleep with in 10mins. Ollie cant handle just 1 sleep, he really turns to custard, grumpy, crying easy etc, so Im just going to keep trying with the routine. hopefully it works and he stays with 2 sleeps

this is probably the start of him trying to change to one sleep.
My DS has been trying to drop his day sleep altogether(3yr) for about 6 months.. you just have to go with the flowif he doesnt want a sleep dont force it but maybe bring his sleep earlier so say noon instread of 1.30.
some days he is likely to get grumpy and those are probably your busy days

    Hi all
My DS is 8 months old and has roughly 2 sleeps a day. One is often only 45 mins and the other can be 1-2hrs long. He has always done smaller sleeps. Usually one is at 9.30/10.30 ish and the other at 1.30/2.30 ish depending on when he went to sleep. It the second sleep is the short one (and often it is unless we are home in the morning for his day sleep), then he can be awake from 3pm until bedtime at 7.30/8, which means dinnertime is crazy grumpy. He has been rapid at dropping sleeps so it would not surprise me if he is at one sleep at 10months!
    Goodluck all

My DD#3 dropped to one day sleep around 8-9 months (much to my horror). We were (before school runs !!!!) late risers - wouldnt get up till 8am, so i just stretched her out till 1pm, and she would sleep till 330pm, back in bed again around 630-645pm......all kids are different, you may find your little one is not following the norm, but as you can see there are plenty of us that have experienced a 10mth old having 1 day sleep and im pretty sure they turned out okay...good luck !!!!
