Question BMI 37, safe to conceive?

Hello guys, I have just signed up because I have one question.
My BMI is 37 and my husband and I are ready to have our first child. But is it safe for me to conceive with all this weight? That is if I can even get pregnant. I know there are some risks but what are the more common ones for someone of my BMI? And will the benifits out weigh the risks? Is it worth the risk?
Of course I plan to get as healthy as possible during pregnancy and I have even now strated to eat healthier and excercise.
Any input would be much apriciated.
    Thank you,
    The(very clucky)NewWife

You will be fine! You may have some problems getting pg, but there are many, many women who fall pg quickly who are overweight. Of course it is preferable to be a healthier weight simply because of the pressure being pg can place on you and taking into account any additional weight you gain during the pg, etc, but overall it isn't generally a problem unless you have other health problems. Good luck with TTCing and I hope you stick around!

    Hey there. Welcome to BB.

I have a higher BMI than you and gave had 3 pregnancies I have gained alittle over 3kgs for this pregnancy and feel great.

Being overweight on it's own isn't a reason to not fall pg easily- it's the other stuff that happens as a result of being overweight that does it such as hormone imbalances causing irregular periods etc.

Best of luck luv and I look forward to seeing your pregnancy announcement sometime soon I hope

Wow thanks for the fast reply guys. I feel better now thank you =) well I think we will go ahead. Might just pop in to see a doctor to double check, but ohhh I am so excited!! I have always been healthy and I rarely get sick. Just fat =/ I'm tipping the scales at 108kgs this morning, but now I have motivation to loose some weight. For my amazing husband and our future baby XD thanks again, I am just finishing AF now and ready to start TTC. One more thing, I have just come off the pill just last week, will that make conceiving a little slower?

My BMI was higher than that with both pregnancies and I have 2 perfect baby girls. You will be fine. Just make sure you stay as healthy as you can while pregnant and exercise a couple times a week

my BMI is much higher and Ive had 3 successful pregnancies. They do look at you as high risk though. It also depends if you would be a public or private patient. I heard that over a certain BMI they wont accept you, but I cannot confirm this as I have always gone private and they have had no issues with my BMI or weight. Goodluck!

hi & welcome! and great news

i'm another one with a high bmi - and we conceived within a couple of cycles both times. as a PP said, if you go public it may push you into a high risk category which can limit which hospital you can go to but it's not a huge deal (imo). i'm only 14 weeks with this PG but felt pretty good last time round & could still jump up out of my seat at 40 weeks & went to the footy a couple of days before my EDD without any hassle.

good luck, i hope your TTC journey is a speedy one

    Good luck!!!

And as for just coming off the pill - I was on it for 10 years and got UTD first month! Unfortunately that pregnancy ended in miscarriage but I was UTD again a couple of months later and now have a beautiful princess Can't wait to see your pregnancy announcement

Same here - I am overweight, was on the pill for 13 years, and was super blessed to get pregnant my first month off and trying! DD is now one month old. You might find you're higher risk for gestational diabetes, which I developed, but then I found that stopped me from gaining too much weight - I only gained 4-5kg, and am already 14kg below what I was weighed at when 8 weeks PG.

Good luck and have fun trying

YAY Congrats on the all clear to TTC!!! I weighed the same weight as you at the start of all my pregnancies. My first pregnancy my OB said I was high risk for Gestational diabetes and sent me to a dietician to prepare a suitable low GI eating plan for myself and the baby and was monitored through the pregnancy. I only put on 3 kgs from the start of pregnancy to when I gave birth. I didnt get gestational diabetes then or with my other pregnancies. Though all of them I only gained 5kgs at most and then am a lower weight after the pregnancies than I ever was. Goodluck with TTC!!!

Oh *Belle* thank you for posting! It makes me feel so much better knowing there is someone else that conceived at the same weight as me! I feel alot better =)

And thanks Kimbles01 and chody47, I don't really know anything about charting my cycle or when I O so the plan is just to BD everyday XD hubby is loving it lol.

And also thanks tellytubby and sloane for the welcomes and good luck. Yeah I have to go to the hospital in the next town for all my appointments but its not too bad, only an hour away.

I didn't chart or anything either. I kind of knew what to look for in terms of mucous discharge, but honestly it was really just guess work and dedication to DTD!
