The first time round (DS1) I was under the care of a fertility specialist, so had lots of blood tests to ensure ovulation and check hormone levels. I didn't require any other tests or other invasive testing. We TTC #3 for nearly 12 months (DS2 was a happy, unplanned pregnancy) so I went to my dr who referred me to a ObGyn. Unlike the FS, I only had a BT on day 21 - which wasn't helpful as often I didn't ovulate till day 21 ... so I'd use my wits and BBT to work out when I ovulated, and then I'd go get a BT seven days later. I felt quite unsupported by the ObGyn who initially diagnosed me with PCOS without a blood test, ultrasound or anything (other than irregular cycles, I don't have other PCOS symptoms). So after four cycles of Clomid I went the alternate route as mentioned, and conceived within three months.

Stir crazy is a good description. I vowed not to obsess about conceiving #3, but I found I couldn't help it.
