    Question Depo & pregnancy?

    Just curious...

Does anyone know the effects of depo provera on a pregnancy?

I've heard it can increase the risk of premature birth, miscarriage & physical birth defects?

Has anybody on here fallen pg on it? Or around the same time they had the shot? I read that if depo is done in the first tri thats when the risks are greater.

I found this online at Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT

Does Depo Provera have any effects on the baby if a woman uses it during pregnancy or conceives soon after discontinuing Depo Provera?
The delay in return of fertility after the last injection is due to a continuing low level of hormone in the woman?s body following the last injection.

There has been some theoretical concern regarding the possible effects of small amounts of hormone on the developing child. However, to date there has been no suggestion of an increase of abnormalities in babies born to women who become pregnant after using Depo Provera as their contraceptive. Even when pregnant women were treated with Depo Provera in high doses because of a threatened miscarriage, their babies were normal. However, it is recommended that pregnancy be excluded prior to giving an injection

Hi bjrose I thoguht the only type of pg you could get while on depo was an ectopic pg (at least that is what the dr's always told me) and they also said that you could only get the shot at eh end of your period to make sure that you weren't pregnant at the time of getting the deop shot HTH

    Hi.
I don't think that's quite true about the ectopics. There might be a higher risk, but I doubt all pregnancies on depo would end up ectopic. Quite a few people have had babies after doing just that

I did a pg test when I got the shot, but I'd had about 2.5 weeks between the last one wearing off, & the next shot. The test was negative at the time, but if that was also the time of conception then the test wouldn't have registered. It was 2 weeks after that I started feeling off, which is around the time symptoms usually start to show (well for me anyway).

Just for the record though, I'm not UTD. 2 tests later... I didn't want to be, but am still disappointed that I'm not, lol. 3 days of freaking out thinking about little baby things again... Now I have to get over all this cluckiness I thought was gone!

bjrose I know what you mean about thinking you are pg (regardless of trying or not) and than finding out you aren't! It really is hard 'not' to get clucky when you think there's a chance you are pg... Who knows maybe this might get you thinking about haveing another one hehehehehe
