Has anyone ever had a CVS or amniocentesis test performed?
HI Ladies,
I am just curious to find out how many of you have had CVS or amniocentesis tests done?
My DP has an inherited genetic disorder that can cause horrible genetic mutations which both his brother and sister passed away from in early infancy.
I am already 'fertility challenged' and to be honest really frightened of going through with this kind of testing...
In my situation, it will be necessary to undergo this test as in some cases, should I become pregnant, there may be a situation where the baby will be 'incompatiable with life' (doctors terminology.) In these circumstances the baby will not live more than a few weeks and those few weeks will be filled with pain and misery for him or her.
My head is in a bit of a daze actually, I just want to hear your stories, and know how you handled this sort of situation.
Hi Kimmi
My hubby and i also carry a faulty gene that with our other parntners did not cause any problems with our children but together we have a 1 in 4 chance of concieving a baby with SLO we have a servere mutation so our babies are affected quite badly and are not compatible with life we did not find this out until after our daughters autopsy and DNA testing we are now about to start PGD IVF so they can test our embryos for the gene and we can have normal embryos put in so we can avoid the stress and heartbreak of waitng for the 12 week test if the ivf does not work we have decided to try naturally after christmas and have the CVS at 11 weeks as now they know what they are looking for we will know early enough to terminate if the baby is affected .
With our daughter i had a CVS and amnio and both came back normal so we had to wait until almost 20 weeks to be sure she would not survive the CVS was painless and easy i had slight period type cramps afterwards the amnio was painful and awful and i would not have one again it is a very stressful thing to go through we are still going through it and we lost Abbi 7 months ago we have our hearts set on a healthy baby so we decided to give the pgd ivf a go first then try naturally if it does not work if there is any questions i can help you with please dont hesitate to ask.

Hi Kimberly, I've never had a CVS done but did have an amnio 3yrs ago. At my 20wk scan it was discovered our baby had Trisomy 13 so needed an amnio to confirm. The procedure was not painful at all maybe slightly unconfortable. Really hope everything works out for you.
I've had 2 amniocentesis & they were very straight forward & trouble free. I had absolutely no cramping afterward. The procedure was uncomfortable but really down there on the list of most uncomfortable things I have endured in life! The site was a bit sore for a week or so - but again nothing dramatic.
I found the waiting the most painful. I was blessed both times with a favourable outcome.
It is important to go to the best in your state. The more experienced and the lower his/her miscarriage rate the better.
I wish you luck my love - I understand how difficult the whole journey is. Just try to take one step at a time.
Kimmi most women find that the thought and the lead up is worse than the actual amnio. I worked in this area so I've seen quite a lot. Generally women find it uncomfortable but not painful...
Yes I had CVS with my baby. It is not pleasant by any means, but I am glad we had it done - we had a very high chance of downs so it made the rest of our pregnancy very care free.
A friend of mine is in a similar boat to you - she is going through pre genetic diagnosis. I wonder if this is something that could help you?
