Hello, I am new here and would just like to find out if there are any women out there who have a similar story to mine....
In a nutshell..........
I recently suffered a pulmonary embolism (blood clots in lungs) and was on warfarin for 6 months- and all is clear now. However after all the standard tests to determine why this occurred it was believed that it wasn't a genetic issuei.e no factor v leiden, or thrombolic issues. Well, i have since received a more thorough check by a biomedical doctor who discovered that i am positive for the mthfr gene- homozygous- has anybody here heard of this?
As it stands, when i want to start ttc i will need to be taking blood thinner injections daily, i am also on a host of B vitamins and folinic acid........
What makes it more complicated though is that my husband has also been tested and we have the exact same gene mutation. I will be seeing specialists as i will be considered high risk- just taking each day as it comes, but would love to hear from anyone who may know about this and have stories of success or advice?
(I apologise if there is a thread already addressing this)
Thanks in advance

I too have had blood clots!!! i had 3 quite extensive clots in my left leg (2 in my calf and 1 that had already broken off gone right near my upper thigh/groin) so i too was on warfarin for six months. i have been told that i will have to be taking clexane injections while pregnant too (ttc october). however they dnt think mine was due to genes so i cant help u there sorry but i can b here for you if u need to talk to sum1.
Thanks for the reply and for the offer to talk, much appreciated. It's not great having that happen, my life changed the day I got those clots. So had you been on a flight or immobile for sometime to have developed those clots? Have the doctors run all the appropriate tests?
sorry to ask so many questions, but do you have children already or will this be your first when you ttc? This will be my first and i just want to make sure that i am totally ready health wise. I'm so glad that i am off the warfarin though, all those weekly blood tests were pretty annoying.........but i guess some people out there have it worse.
is there anything else that the doctors have told you about what to expect during pregnancy, due to previous blood clots?
No, no flights, the only excuse the could give me was the pill and another medication i was on could of caused it but then they also said that they really dnt know y i got it. but i have all the relavent tests and nothing came up. so its a mystery to me and the doctors but it means i can never take the pill again just incase.
I have a little boy who will b 4 next week, my clots were a year and a half after my pregnancy so it wasnt caused by that and that also means i wasnt sitting around immobile either, lol. too busy chasing a toddler.
The doctors havent really told me anything else about my blood clots and pregnancy, i think they will just keep an eye on me and i will more than likely have clexane injections. they said i shouldnt be at risk really but since my clots were extensive i will probab;y have injections just as a precaution.
Oh ok, that is interesting. I too was on the pill- yasmin for only 4 months, so that combined with the flight was the likely triggers for me and the fact that i have the gene mutation. Even though i have this gene, it took the pill and the flight for it to become apparent otherwise for 29 years i had no previous issues with clots. This gene is linked with miscarriages and other pregnancy complications, so that is why i am ensuring that i am taking all the necessary vitamins so that i can have the best chance of a healthy pregnancy.
My bio-medical doctor is monitoring my health now and i also see a heamotologist who will monitor the clexane injections. So once i get the official go ahead from these doctors, then i will consider starting. Hubby and I think towards the end of the year- very exciting and scary at the same time.
