Question Irregular Cycles - going for ultrasound, help!

I'm 28 and never been pregnant. Since coming off the pill in march my cycles have been crazy. It took 4 months to get my first AF after ovulating. and now this month its CD 23 with no sign of ovulating.

I went to my GP the other day and asked her what I should do. She is sending me for a pelvic ultrasound on wednesday.

I'm just wondering what the procedure will be like? I think it will be external and internal. I have to have a full bladder.

Also if i havent ovulated by wednesday, would they be able to tell on the ultrasound when i will be ovulating?

She said something about PCOS but I dont have any of the symptoms apart from the irregular ovulation. I'm hoping its just from coming off the pill. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

Probably dildo cam Mich... They get the best internal piccies..

Did your GP do a hormone work up as well to see what your LH and FSH ratio is?

    Good luck on wednesday xx

Ps I O'd on CD 23 and didn't realise until my chart drew lines!

congrats on o-ing. its so exciting!

didn't do blood test. i had one a while ago which was on her computer and she said it was all fine then. but that was about 9 months ago i think - it was definately before i went off the pill. maybe i need another one? GP said i didn't need one though.
my LH seems to be normal cause i'm getting negative results on opk. and the opk went positive when i ovulated last month.i read that women with pcos often get positive opk all the time...???

They usually do both when I go - so yes a full bladder and then they let you go wee before they do the internal as you don't need a full bladder for it.

Women with PCOS seem to have higher levels of LH in their system so they get false positives. I got a false surge earlier on (around CD14) and then I must have missed my surge when I O'd and then got ANOTHER surge AFTER I O'd.. so OPKs don't work for me.

Maybe your GP doesn't think it's necessary to do a hormone panel yet cos you don't have any other PCOS symptoms? But If you were on the pill 9 months ago when that previous BT was run, that definitely won't give you a true indication of what your hormones are doing. Also, I had tests for testosteron levels, prolactin and TSH cos they can all cause screwy hormone levels and irregular periods.

Maybe ask your GP when you go through your scan about getting your hormone levels checked, will give you a better picture of what's going on (if the GP can't figure it out from the US).

And yeah... what Ausgirl said - they'll do both (internal and external). External is the worst with a full bladder... Ooooooh the relief when you get to pee before having dildo cam...

    Good luck honey!

Hahaha! I was nearly crying when i went, so they let me "empty" half of my bladder while I waited. But I had a 45 minute drive from work to the clinic.

Mitch83, I have very irregular cycles both before and after i went on the pill. I am what the ultrasound technition describes as "borderline PCO" I don't have any symptoms besides very irregular cycles and positive OPK's all the time. But I have tried clomid (fertility drug) and since stopping and going back to natural cycles i no longer have positive OPK's all the time
It's still early days after coming of BC, so your cycles will probably be a bit crazy. But i would definitely get BT's etc just to rule out anything that could compromise you concieving.
    Good luck!

thanks - omg i hate blood tests. the last one i had i fainted afterwards! i'm hopeless! i'll see how the ultrasound goes (its on wednesday... ) and take it from there i guess.

would they be able to tell when i will ovulate next?

I'm not sure if they can tell when you will ovulate by blood test, but I think they can tell round about when you might ovulate by the ultrasound. Blood tests are usually done to confirm that ovulation has occurred.
Just don't look! I NEVER look when they are taking blood. Plus I have crap veins, they are all "jelly" like the nurses always tell me. So I just have to put both my arms out and get them to try both.
Let us know how you go

Hi ladies. u/s went well. she lady that did it said it all looked normal and that i prob didn't have PCOS, but that i should get a blood test to rule it out. so off to the docs tomorrow for that. she said it is prob just my body regulating itself from being on the pill for 10 years.
not looking forward to blood test but it has to be done. ugh.
anyway i'm really happy with the results. she said there were lots of little follicles there but no dominant one at this stage so O wont be for a while. not sure how long in advance they can tell this though.
will let u know how i go with BT.

bad news today. i have polycystic ovaries and so probably PCOS. had blood tests today. go back for results monday probably. or tuesday. booked in to see gyno tuesday week.
GP said the gyno would probably put me on metformin or clomid.

i cried and cried and cried. but now i'm feeling a bit better. its not the end of the world i know, but i was so excited to get pregnant soon, and now it will be harder than i thought.

Oh no, don't be upset Mitch83
There are PLENTY of ladies that have happy healthy babies with PCOS. I recommend you post in the PCOS threads to get some inspiration from other members there, you will be surprised.
Unfortunately, OPK's may not work for you though. Are you temping? I don't, but it may be a good idea. And when your on metformin/clomid you can join that thread, the ladies are great support.

so blood test came back normal. no insulin resistance or hormone problems. woo hooo!!

going to see a better gp (as i only went to a medical centre) and see what they suggest for me.

still temping but been waking up different times (started new job) so my chart lookes crazy. plus i missed a day. it'll be more regular now that i'm settling into my new job and new waking time.

opks worked for me last time i used them. been getting lots of negatives lately which is a bit sad but hopefully a positive is around the corner

That's good news I work around a roster so I never temp, it's too inconsistent. And I am waiting also for a positive OPK after an early m/c. I have no idea when i will ovulate because my cycles are crazy! Hope you get a positive soon

    Good luck!
