Question HELP! Semen Analysis Results NOT GOOD?

Hubby and I got his results today, which I found quite upsetting. The doc also frightened us by saying it was highly unlikely we would conceive normally? BUT he then said to keep trying and didn't really offer any further options?

    Here are the stats

    Volume...........5ml

    Motility...................50%
    Rapid progressive.......20%
    Sluggish progressive....20%
    Non Progressive.........10%
    Immotile..................50%

    Sperm Count .............16 million

    Abnormal Forms..........54%

We understand that anything under 20million is not good! But how bad is it? The doctor didn't offer anything but a suggestion that hubby start on Goji Juice...

Any help gratefully received....Hubby and I very confused and upset. Does this mean IVF for us? I have my 1st gyno appt in two weeks for me to get checked out, so I will be asking him more, but that's a long time to wait and hubby is too stressed about this to wait that long!

    Thanks

    Kyliejane and hubby

    First of all, don't panic!

While those results aren't great, they certainly aren't the end of the world. The good thing is that you actually have rapid progressive sperm, which are the ones that are basically able to fertilise the egg. We have zero rapid progressive sperm and it was that zero in that category that lead to us needing IVF with ICSI.

I don't know just what stats are needed for IUI or anything like that as our results were beyond bad... to my mind natural conception isn't impossible, just unlikely. It's still not the end of the line as there is a lot that can be done.

If you're not ready to start assisted conception at this stage, perhaps investigate menevit and the goji juice that your doctor recommended and give it three months or so and see if things improve. I'm told three months is how long it will take for the body to generate an entirely new batch of sperm and for the vitamins to have an impact.

We were told we'd have no chance to conceive normally, pity I tried all of my late 30's to do this :/

Not much help to you though. I don't know how bad that all is, my husband is taking menevit maybe try that too.

    Good Luck

There are lots of things that can be done to increase the numbers and motility of sperm. Lulu is spot-on with the Zinc, Vitamin E and C are also really important, as are Omega 3 oils. It takes 116 days to make entirely new sperm, so don't despair - get hubby onto some supplements, and have another test done in around 3 months time. I have often seen sperm counts double, and motility increase dramatically from just using the nutrients listed above - all the best to you two xxx

I can't add much to the previous emailers - but I would agree that getting your DH onto vitimens, healthy eating, exercise, less stress and less alcohol can have a real impact on sperm count....

    so good luck!
