    Controling weight whilst pregnant

    Ladies, I need help

I am pregnant with bub number 3 and my thighs are already rubbing together and I am only 12wks!! This usually doesn't happen until I am a couple of weeks off giving birth.

I have seen photos of my self after having DD2 and wow I looked terrible. How can I keep my weight under control during my pregnancy? Anyone follow a particular eating and exercise regime?

    Hi Bek,

I am really trying to this time around after gaining 35 kilos with DS1 and going from a BMI of 22 to closer to 30

I'm taking an antenatal aqua class (physio run) twice a week and have just bought the preggi bellies exercise DVD and will do that twice a week as well. I was going to the gym before I fell pg, but my only free nights are the same ones my aqua class is on so I cant get there now, and its difficult on the weekend with DS. At least with the DVD I will be able to do it when he is sleeping.

Anyway, food wise has been a little easier this time as I'm not constantly ravenous, but trying to eat more fruit and veg, less sugar, low fat dairy. I've also ordered a book 'the new glucose revolution' and planning to go low GI for the remainder of the pg to see if that helps

RayRay - I have the PreggieBellies DVD too. I bought it when pregnant with DD2 but didn't use it. I think I'll try and get up early a couple of mornings and give it a go. I also have a treadmil so I'll try and do 20mins or so on that a couple of times per week. I am hoping that the first trimester tiredness will pass very soon...

does your treadmill have a HR monitor - make sure your heartrate is under 150bpm.

No hr monitor unfortunately. I may buy one though. I was wondering what pace I should be walking at. You think 150 is good?

150 is what my personl trainer told me was the max I could get my HR to while pg, she preferred to keep it around 140

I just did lots of walking - six laps of the block every day even at 40 + weeks) and focused on being positive (so what I should eat rather than what I shouldn't). I did have a small bubby though - 10th percentile for weight - so maybe I was a little too restrictive?

BecZ - I am suffering with the same problem, this is going to be my second bub and I stacked on 18kg after first bub 19 months ago. I really don't want to add anymore kgs than I have to. I think the general good advice is to make sure you eat as little junk food as possible and make every calorie count towards the health of little bun in the oven! Varying calorie intake from day to day makes a huge difference to metabolism - it confuses the system as to whether or not it needs to store or burn the surplus in calories. If the body gets used to a certain calorie intake every day the body's metabolism will relax and either store fat or simply become stagnant.

Frequent exercise is obviously really important and as RayRay said keeping the heart rate at a lower level is very important not to stress your body too much. The exact ideal heart rate to maintain is calculated using a specific formula however - according to your current age and weight - I can't remember it off hand but I'm sure google could find it easily enough

I wish I had adhered to these rules in the first place! I think by being sensible it's actually possible to lose fat at a steady rate/ or maintain your current weight with it still being quiet safe (perhaps even desirable) for your little growing youngling

Fingers crossed that we can all be successful in being healthy for ourselves and our younglings (as well as our mental wellbeings as yummy mummies )

Take care, I hope this has been useful

Oh dear, I wish I had read this thread instead of just quickly typing off a very sad and sorry sounding new thread in the general health forum! Basically, I *think* I am pg (AF 2 days late, pg symptoms, but no HPT because of my own incompetency with pee catching) and feeling a bit depressed about not having lost weight first. I was wondering if it's possible to actually lose weight, or at the least not gain any, while pg, for someone who is technically obese (I need to lose 50-60kg). Provided I was ensuring I was getting plenty of nutrients for the baby, not going hungry, and not going too hard in workouts, it would be safe, right?

Hi Acria, congrats! It sounds like you are pg I hope you find that you are soon!
It's definitely possible to safely lose weight whilst being pg, providing it's done in a safe manner directed by your GP. I read in a "Pregnancy&Birth" magazine that it is actually healthier for a baby if an overweight/obese mother is able to maintain or lose weight during the pregnancy, rather than a slimmer mother stacking on the kgs.

Talk to your GP about it when you have your blood test and they'll be able to help you for sure
    Good luck with everything!

    xx

Mumma&Bubbas -Interesting information re calorie intake. I really need to stick to some sort of diet during this pregnancy. Fortunately I lost 4 kgs before falling pregnant and I was back to my pre second pregnancy weight but my shape has changed and I have no muscle tone to speak of.

I was thinking of joing Weight Watchers online just to get meal ideas and keep a track of my diet.Anyone have any opinions on that idea?

Acria- I certainly hope that you have got yourself a BFP. If you are pregnant I would talk to your doctor regarding weight loss and I would get a referal to a dietitian. At least you will have guided information. Personally my opinion is if you are eating healthy, avoiding junk, and doing some light excercise I can't see why you'd put on more weight than required for the baby.

Ladies, I've got the pregiebellys dvd and so far I tried the warm up and I felt like such an unco!!!. Maybe I'll just stick to doing 20mins treadmil and the toning exercises on the dvd only.

My time is limited because my girls wake up any time from 6.30 to 7am and I am buggered if I can get time to exercise in peace anyother time during the day. I best just make myself get up at 5.45 each morning....Eeek
