    Going cold turkey

I'm quitting sugar. I can't believe it, but I figure if I tell people I might feel accountable and actually do it. I use sugar to self-medicate when I'm sad or afraid and it's not working. It's probably just messing up my pancreas and clogging my arteries. To say nothing about the size of my backside. It's also probably messing up fertility. But it doesn't fix uncomfortable emotions.

So. Time to let go that particular crux. Wish me luck. Support welcome. I may fall off the wagon but hope I won't beat myself up and just jump right back on. I don't think I've come to terms with the fact that this means no chocolate no sugar in my coffee either

But there it is. I can't just have a little bit so it all has to go.

I can't believe something like this is such a big deal to me......

    Going cold turkey

    Hi L&B,
I went through this about 8 years ago and it's made such a difference to my mood and my ability to manage myself physically, emotionally and psychologically. I'll PM you some ideas for helping for withdrawal ASAP.

I have done it in the past and should be doing it now! In fact - why don't I just suck it up and support you by joining you. The first week is hardest but then you do slowly stop craving it.

Good luck. I have done this before and the first few days are hell, but within a week you will start feeling a lot better and more energetic.
Don't forget that foods that are not necessarily sweet, e.g. white bread, have lots of sugar in them too, so try to avoid those.
Oh and if you can't live without chocolate, you can have the diabetic stuff. GL.

When I did the South Beach Diet induction phase last year it said no sugar including fructose, honey, glucose, etc, etc. Of course, that is very, very low carb so it might be different. Even some vegetables are high in sugar (carrots for example) so it just depends on how far you want to go.

I'll do it with you! Not permanently I don't think, but I'll set myself a one week goal and go from there

*gulp* I'm in! I went cold turkey last year and felt great. I gave up white flour at the same time and found the two were so hard to avoid and I only lasted three weeks...

... but I need to ditch the sugar again. No more excuses! My little girl needs her Mummy to be healthy and not lethargic and always whinging about how tubby she has become

White flour can wait until I'm not BF anymore...

I'll join you. I tried a couple of weeks ago on July the 1st with the 50 day challenge and I lasted 3 days
It needs to be done though I am well and truly addicted.

Was today your first day or when are you starting?

Today was my first day. No sugar. I ended up grabbing some fries which aren't healthy but other options in a rush were GF muffins. I am now getting dessert cravings so I'll have to find an alternative. I think I'll have some yoghurt and fruit.

I've decided to keep honey as an option, so I can have something on my porridge.

I'll do better menu planning tomorrow. The inner sugar junkie is trying to find ways to sabotage myself.

Well I will start tomorrow then. Will have to find a way not to eat all the junk in the house

With your porridge you could try some grated apple (skin on) and cinnamon. At least you are getting some fibre with the sugar from the apple (which is better) rather than the straight sugar from the honey. It's yummy too.

Are you avoiding fructose - it'd probably help. It's hard, but if you can cut out fruit, except maybe pears, then the cravings will go quicker (and that counts honey out too). I foudn that after a couple of weeks I coudl eat fruit again without the sugar cravings.
I found eating lots helped - stay full. and plenty of protein helps too to cut the cravings. But, basically, you need to be very tough with yourself and don't reward one or two days of good behaviour.

Yep, dessert has been re-routes here too. So DH is having honey pudding and cream, I'm having natural yogurt with a passionfruit on top.
