Whatever model you get, make sure you get the Turbine head attachment with it, like the others have mentioned. Some models come with it, but you can buy it as an extra attachment. It's definitely a must have! Not sure which model mine is sorry, but it's the one with the white lid.

Agreed. We got one that is specifically for animal hair/allergies - our two jack russell's shed like no tomorrow! Ours has the purple lid.

The turbine head is different to the motor head......we have the DC23 Motörhead. The motor head is its own model as it has power running right down to the head inside the hosing. The Motörhead gives you so much extra suction where it is needed.

I have the dyson yellow barrel. I don't have a turbo head as I have mainly hard floors with a little bit of carpet. Mine has seperate heads for the floor surfaces. I love mine. I love that you can wash the filter and don't have to buy replacement ones and the barrel can be washed as well. It does a fantastic job dealing with cat hair and general grubbiness of having pets inside too.
The only minor thing I can fault is at the end, when you take of the floor tool and put on one of the little heads to use in the car, the end of the tube is quite chunky and very hard to get into tight spots in the car.
