Let's Talk About Aprons!

Thanks Bath. Liv and I might have to go and browse around at some fabrics this week. Hopefully I'll get at least one or two made for each of us before bubba comes. Help me fill in the days that are currently full of waiting!!

I also forgot to add that if you have spent too long on BB of an afternoon and get sprung by your DH coming in the front door... one of the best things to do (before he sees you) is to quickly put on an apron! It instantly gives a better impression!

PMSL Bath!!! I think I am going to get back into the habit of wearing them, I used to wear one when I was baking, but I always managed to get some on my clothes even with the apron . I might have to make some that provide a little more coverage. I think I will do them so they are adjustable in the neck and can be tied nearer to the bust to allow for the constant chest spills.

I found the calico or drill cotton ones the best because they are thick and absorb more liquid spills than the lighter cottons, and I like that more crisp sturdy style.

I'm so excited I just had to let you all know. I cooked for the very first time in my brand new apron today . I baked a fruit cake and surprise surprise my clothes were still clean afterwards, YAY!!! DH laughed at me but I did look, well let's say interesting with my belly.

I can't wait to get to spotlight and get some materials!!

I always find that having the tie around my neck ends up hurting my neck, I'd love to try some of the aprons that have sleeves? Shoulders? That tie behind the back ..

Kaz: oh yes! I too would like an apron with arm holes instead of just a tie... but haven't been brave enough to attempt to sew one like that yet... i have one like that (one of MILs) but it is too short for my liking so i don't wear it much. I was watching a movie on the ABC last night and all the women were wearing sleeved aprons (it was set in 1928 -1931). If I ever find a new one or a pattern i'll post.

ETA: type "addicted to Aprons" in Google and you'll find a blog about aprons... I can't link because the author also sells them. Also type in "vintage aprons" and you see lots of great designs.

I have a easy peasy apron pattern if anyone wants me to PM them.....its an audrey and maude pattern...i made my apron from just cheapo spotlight fabric - cotton. It turned out gorgeous...but i feel like a dill wearing it....

Oh don't feel like a dill! Honestly compared to the things people wear these days jeans with visible underwear etc wearing an apron has a hell of lot more integrity! Although personally I avoid some fabric designs eg garrish florals... but even that would good on someone. I mean I see women walking around in ponchos... I never thought I would see them being worn beyond the 1970's... and that's out in public... don't worry about what you wear at home... it's YOUR world

APRONS!! I was just thinking I need one! I wear one at work when I'm in the kitchen, and I realised WHY don't I wear one at home in the kitchen!?

I want one in a funky fabric (even one that looks retro - or is retro - would be great!!)

So far I have just used existing aprons as templates. They are flat, so easy to trace. Check out Op Shops for some vintage fabric (if you want the real thing).

DP asked for an apron for his bday, so I got him one!

But I went for store-bought (DJs had them on special for $20) - adjustable strap at the top and nice and long. I think it looks great on him. He does most of the cooking at our house.

For those who don't like the strap around the neck make the neck straps extra long, cross them over (place holes, like buttonholes, at the waist) and thread straps through these then ties at the back of your waist.
Hope this makes sense.
This way it stops the pulling at the neck.

...i have a pattern....its thought out though, not one you cut the fabric from. But honestly its easy peasy. Are you interested? I will photocopy it over the next few days and can post/email it to you if you like ?

I have a 1950's style image of a DH standing at the sink washing dishes wearing his wifes frilly apron with the caption: "I know what turns women on" as a fridge magnet near my sink... funny but true. DH's should wear more aprons! (And not just at the BBQ). I'm sure your DH looks very handsome Jennifer!

We have a kitchen garden attached to the school I work in and the teacher who runs the garden and the cooking lesson has an apron that has a hand towel sewn into the front so she always has something to wipe her hands on. Someone is in the process at the moment of making class set of aprons and I think they will all have hand towels attached to them as well so the kids get into a good habit of cleaning and drying their hands as they cook.
