I was shamed into buying a Kirby system just after we got married - 5 years and still going strong! I've only changed the bag a few times, but for most of that it was just the 2 of us and no pets. It is pretty heavy, but I'm happy to deal with the weight for such a brilliant machine. And it's the whole system too, so you can shampoo your carpets as well. I haven't tried it, but I'm pretty sure Limeslice has one and shampoos her own carpets.

I definitely think it's worth $3k - I share it around with my sister and Mum, and they love it too!

I agree - I have a yellow barrel and love it! You can get these for around $300-400 at times.

I've had my Miele about 10 years. I actually dont remember when i got it - had it for aaages. It goes and it goes. I lost an attachment a while ago, but that's not a real issue for me. It's not an upright, but I probably couldnt afford one of those when I bought it. No idea how much I spent, but I wasn't exactly earning much back then.

We have a new cleaner who says she prefers Miele to Dyson - reckons they do a better job.

Yeah. DH refuses to clean so insists on one. Life is short etc and he'd prefer to spend his time doing other things. I've volunteered to save money, but we figured I'd just get cranky if he messed up my clean floors etc. It's better if we just outsource it.

The last cleaner brought his own vac, which I thought was rubbish. Ours is better and the new cleaner uses all our products, which I'm happier about. She's cheaper too which is a bonus.

You know MadB you are more than welcome to drop round and test my Meile to see if it's something you'd like.....of course you'd really need to try it throughout the whole house to make sure you're happy with it on every surface......

I love my Dyson. I used to have cheapy ones, so compared to them, he really sucks.
I truly love him. Although a cleaner would be nice too...

I didn't get an upright as it seemed to me you have to push around all the heavy stuff with each stroke ITMS? Mine is a yellow barrel one and we bought him from Harvey Normans about 3 years ago for about $300. Sounds like a lot, but he's been worth it i think.

I have a miele and I don't remember it costing much. It's not a bad vacuum, it does the job but I think a dyson would be better.

we have the Dyson DC23. It really sucks. I like emptying the barrel, because, to be honest, I forget when I have a bag and don't know it's full. With the dyson you see what you're vacuuming up. I generally need to empty before I've done the whole house. It is quite satisfying, really!

I have one of the barrel dysons, for multi floors, carpet/tiles/floorboards, and a hand held cordless. Not sure of model number, as they ave changed since I bought it.

Dyson DC19 with a Turbine head.
Not sure they make it anymore. It had a telescope handle and a hard floor head and an extra flat head that was for going underneath things (i never bother with that bit). The Turbine head is good for carpet, the Hard floor head is good for, well, hard floors. Funny that.

I bought it because we had a dog and it did a good job on his hair.
