    thanks
i decided to just rejoin choice and see what they say. Will go with the Miele S5311 - top rec in thte mid-price range.
That looks good. I just had a look at our model - it's a S 2111 Autumn Red. The colour being the most important part

If only we could afford a Miele washing machine

I bought a Dyson 24 - asthma and allergy friendly one (I can't remember the exact term they used but I know it was good for people with those conditions). I was tired of seeing my hair on the dusky pink (yes you read that right) carpet and our previous $20 vacuum just wasn't picking it up. I got the slightly smaller version (the mini I think it was called) but I figured I could cope with emptying the barrel more often that spending the extra $$ on getting a bigger one. - Just used in again and I love how it sucks!!!!

well i've changed my mind cos hte local stores don't have it. sigh.
But a closer inspection of the choice review of the 2 models they do have tells me the s5211 is pretty much as good, just not so great with pet hair (doesn't matter) or around the edges (can live with it). And only $300.

Madb with the miele you can upgrade the floor tool. And the filter system! Actually any floor tool can be upgraded to turbo brush to help pick up pet hair. Gahh I work too much lol I work for a vacuum retailer lol can't you tell pm me if you'd like more info on this...
