I found the real carpet cleaning stuff (made by sabco or similar) is better than the preen stuff. It has been around for years and does the same thing but better. I think my mum used to use a powder one for spot cleaning and that was quite good.
don't know where you live but this suggestion is only good for warm climates where the rug can dry. We used to take the rug outside, drape it over DD's climbing thingy and spray it with floor cleaner and then spray it with water and get a broom and give it a scrub with the broom. then spray with hose to rinse it. gives it a very thorough clean but takes a while to dry so needs to be a nice sunny day. Also we don't do that since the water restrictions as it uses heaps of water but comes up like new, especially if you spot clean before.
I live just out of Melb, so can't really take them outside for a wash. I haven't got anywhere big enough that I could drape them either.
I might just have to give them a super-duper vacuum, then a good scrub by hand . Or get the Man to get me the carpet cleaner! Yeah right.
Does anyone use steam mops on carpet? I think they are advertised as doing carpets aren't they? I just thought that if they work alright, I might try to save up for one to do my wooden floors and the two big mats.
I agree Preen does nothing. On my dirty rug, honestly, shampoo or laundry liquid words best! I do up a bowl of nice warm water, dip a sponge in (not too wet), put a tiny bit of soap/ shampoo on it and scrub a bit of the rug. Then I take a towel and dab the rug with a bit of clean water and rub dry-ish. It takes a while and a lot of elbow grease, but it does the job much better than any other carpet cleaner I've used.
