I have an old Nilfisk Freestyle vacuum. It is roughly 10 years old and has never missed a beat. However, it isn't sucking like it should which is really the whole point of it!
We won't spend a fortune on one. We only have the 3 bedrooms and lounge room that are carpeted, everything else is floorboards.
We just bought a hoover hygiene plus on the weekend, goes well and has a power head too to get right down into the carpet. was $500 on sale. nice and light and easy to monouvre
Keep an eye out for the Godfreys sales - they are usually quite good, and there seem to be a few of them at this time of year!
Bagless are great - I recently retired my Nilfisk too and replaced it with a dyson - my DH is using the Nilfisk for reno cleaning so it still works OK, just doesn't have the suction. Bagless are DIY clean usually which is great for maintaining suction. Power heads definately help with carpet with young kids, specially if you have animals on the carpet as well.
You could go a wet/dry vac which my parents have, I loved using it cause I would shampoo the carpet about once every 6 months.
Our Dyson has so far met any challenges our boys have thrown at it head on. Coffee, chalk, hair, hundreds & thousands, beads, and everyday dirt. We've had it maybe 5 years? I love how easy they are to empty. As long as you have somewhere to store an upright, they're great. They're not the world's cheapest vacuum (I got ours when I worked at Myer, there was a sale on vacuums, I had a voucher, and it was a staff discount day ), but I've never had any complaints with it. I do have to take to the power head with scissors occasionally, my hair gets trapped around it and stops it spinning. They're pretty easy to pull apart where you need to though. I've had to pull the head totally apart after the coffee incident.
We've got a Dyson too and I love it - just purchased a new one after having our other Dyson for 10 years, so DH could use the old one at work. However, they are pretty pricey. I just wanted to second Kazbah on the Godfrey's sales - I am pretty sure they have one on at the moment in which you trade in your old vac and get 50% off selected vacuums. Might be exactly what you are looking for!
dyson with a turbo head here. pics up all our white puppy dog hair and is just spectacular... pity we're moving to a fully tiled house! lol. it cost about $800 and was worth every cent.
I have an electrolux and it is fantastic! I was helping my friend clean her house and she has a dyson and it was nowhere near as easy to use as my electrolux!
I was a diehard Dyson girl until recently when mine kicked the bucket.
The lady at HN thought I wouldn't look at anything else until I asked her if there was anything comparable.
She showed me the new electrolux. It is fantastic!!! Twice the suck, easier to clean, cheaper to replace filters etc and....half the price.
Oh and it has a suck adjuster and the lowest suck is so quiet and still sooo efficient..
