Use a good quality dishwasher tablet.

Always.

Clean the dishwasher?? Once every six months or so - is that bad???
How do you clean? With a cleaner or do you get in there yourself?
You can buy this bottle of stuff you put in the dishwasher and do an empty cycle and it cleans out the whole dishwasher and the drain.
