I don't think there is a "Martha Stewart" of washing! I'd say do it however you want!
ETA - there are probably some good guidelines, like using washing power/liquid suitable to your machine (eg front loaders need different stuff to top loaders I think), using cold water so colours don't run (and you get less of those horrible black balloons in the energy saving ads), separating whites and colours so your whites stay whiter.
I'm also very specific about separating delicates/special items (eg nice tops, work shirts that are pricey) so they don't go in with DH's work shorts (he's an electrician) and washing towels by themselves as they shed everywhere!
