This is from Shannon Lush, author of Spotless etc:

    Burnt Pan
Sprinkle bicarb into the pan then sprinkle with vinegar. While it's fizzing, scrub with a nylon brush. You may need to repeat this two or three times for bad burns. For bad burns, cover in vinegar and place the pan in the freezer. Then add bicarb and scrub with a nylon brush

I do the Shannon lush method and my stainless steel pots come up really well, or leave it upside in a frost if you are in a cold area - always worked in bowral

OK.. just have to say... I know not related to the original post... but OH MY GOODNESS... I have clean oven racks!! Soaked em for 3 1/2 hrs and they just wiped clean! (yes I was impatient) Admittedly they're not 100%, still just a few stubborn spots, but I have no doubt if left overnight there'd be no wiping to do!! I had to do a bit of a scrub with my enjo and the fiddly bits were harder to get into... but they are so so so so so much cleaner already. V excited! hehehe. Now to do the oven.

Ooh, must do that myself. My oven is disgusting! The last owners did not clean it before they moved out.

I'm still stunned how easy it was. If I had a spray bottle and a bit more time I'd spray soapy laundry water inside the oven and let it sit and wipe it out. But I just did the bottom of the oven & the door with a scourer & dishwashing liquid and then enjo'd it all off.. came up really good. the sides & top of the oven can wait.. they're not visible LOL.
