I store mine in a big wicker basket and DH's in a blanket box.
Yep it is a pain to get one's right on the bottom, but I generally keep my rarely used shoes on the bottom (for obvious reasons) and the ones you wear the most just end up on the top
Not a prob.
We have a wooden shoe rack on the verandah for DH's grotty work boots and his brother's filthy sneakers, but I have bucketloads of pretty stilettos so I keep them in one of those canvas things you can buy for in your wardrobe (I have to keep them locked up somewhere so the puppy doesn't chew them all!!). It's great because the canvas rack thingee only takes up a little bit of room in my wardrobe, hangs off the rail with a coathanger hook, and all you have to do is stuff a pair in a spare spot (although now I'm storing two, sometimes three pairs in each hole!).
