I have used Clomid (also known as Serophene) for my PCOS. It took 3 goes before I ovulated, with an increase in dose each time. They generally start you out on 50-100 mg, and then bump it up if necessary, with 200mg being the highest dose.
On average, the percentage of women who ovulate using Clomid is very high, in some cases over 85%. The percentage of women who fall pregnant is obviously less than that, but can be as high as 60% of those who ovulated. It's important to know three things though:
1. Clomid is used for a maximum of 6 "cycles" only. If you don't ovulate on this, other medications will be tried.
2. In about 30% of cases, Clomid causes "hostile cervical mucus" which is actually toxic to sperm. As far as I know there is nothing you can do to stop this, but I use a sperm friendly lubricant called Pre-seed (available at Lullaby Conceptions online) just in case.
3. Clomid can have side effects such as bloating, fluid retention and moodiness. My specialist, when I complained about these symptoms, replied "Good- it means it's working!". However if you get serious swelling or weight gain over a few days go to hospital asap as your ovaries have been "hyper stimulated".
I actually got pregnant from Clomid the first time I ovulated - unfortunately I'm now waiting to miscarry (HcG levels no longer doubling at 6 weeks). As far as I know this has nothing to do with the Clomid though.
I wish you the best of luck, and hope this helps.
