    Metformin Mamas

    Hiya everyone!

I started on metformin on Friday prescribed by my GP (but the question was initiated by me).

Would love to hear from anyone who has taken or is on Metformin. Did it regulate your cycles? Weight loss? Side effects?

So far I've got a bit of GI upset, but nothing too major. I'm on CD11 today so not sure if anything exciting is going to happen this month (i.e a "regular" cycle).

Any feedback/stories would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Erica x

OMG the side effects are HORRENDOUS!

I hope my body gets used to the side effects soon! I don't think I could handle it if I had these GI problems ALL the time.

Anyone else have any side effects while on Metformin?

Yes the side effects are awful! I had stomach cramps, the runs, vomitting and nausea but it only last 1-2 weeks. I was on a trial for 3 months and i lost 9kgs the first time. I think i had one period while on it and then had another and after that one i concieved DD but we weren't trying.

Thanks for the feedback Summer! Thats awesome that you lost 9kg and that Side effects only lasted a couple of weeks. And yay for conceiving your DD without even trying - thats what happened with my DS too.. but I'm not expecting it to be that easy this time round

    Hi Black Rose,

Metformin has been recommended to me by one of my docs. Can I ask why you were prescribed it??

    Hope you feel better soon!

When I first started on Metformin the specialist (I have PCOS) advised to start on a smaller dose and gradually increase. Half a tablet for a week then a full up to the dose I was on I think it was one and half at the time but they weren't the slow release as I started taking them in 2004. Also I would recommend taking them with food if you are not already. In the beginning I took them in a morning before I left for work and then ate my breakfast when I got to work, but by then I couldn't eat as I felt nauseas as the tablets had kicked in.
Your body will get used to them it will just take time. I conceived both my babies taking metformin. DS1 was a it will happen when it happens. DS2 was planned and it took 2 months to fall pregnant with DS2. Please remember I had been taking it a while. I look at metformin as diluting the the environment around the ovaries to give the egg chance to ripen and be released.

    Hiya N2l,
I was prescribed Metformin cos I have PCOS, overweight and insulin resistant. I had GD with DS so have to be extra vigilant. We'll trial this for 6 months and if it doesn't get my cycles more regular then we'll give clomid a go and get referred on to a FS.

Thanks for your response hansie. Good to see some mamas have some positive results from it

I need to get a Fasting BGL so I'm not 100% sure what they are. But with my family Hx, the GD, being overweight and the PCOS it's highly likely that I could be insulin resistant

    Hi All!

Well I've been on the metformin 1 week and I've already lost 1.4kg! I didn't really do much to change my diet. I exercised twice this week but other than that, nothing major. The side effects are still there.. but less when I take the medication with food.

AND.. I have been getting +ve OPKs for the past 3 days, so looks like I'm O'ing Normally.

    Super excited.

    Thanks hun

Side effects are still there but it depends on if I've taken the meds with food or not.

Don't think this month is my month. I think we DTD too early and haven't had a chance to BD again since. But it's only the first month so I'm just hoping that I ovulate more than anything

Any others on metformin?? I'd love to hear your experiences! How did it work for you??

Well I haven't O'd this month yet like I thought as no rise in BBT even with +ve OPK. Last cycle was 47 days so hoping it's short than that. Now CD 22 and have had EWM but -ve OPK. We shall see!!

Have had to crush my diabex tabs as they are too big for me. I've been crushing them and mixing them with OJ and drinking it like a shot in one gulp. Not too bad. The only prob is that I get nauseous after taking it but then when I eat something I'm ok.

    Hi,

I was on Diabex and was also advised to start at a low dose and gradually increase to the full dose. Apart from some mild nauseau when I first started on it I dodn't have any other side effects.

It definately regulated my cycles. I was having a regular 31 day cycle and fell pregnant with DS2 after 5 months on Diabex. I stayed on it until I was 16wks pregnant. I hope that it works for you but it may take a little while

I've only been on it for 2 weeks so I'm prepared to ride it out for a few more months yet!

Update: according to FF I O'd on CD23 I had lots of EWM and a -ve OPK.

10 days earlier than my last cycle.

Metformin might be having the desired effect!

I am going to see GP next Friday to see if I can recommence on Metformin. We conceived DD after 2 cycles on Metformin (almost 3 months). It did bring my cycles back after having an Implanon in and regulated them.

Post DD I am averaging 41 day cycles - I had some 50+ day cycles and am roughly now around 33 days.

I am hoping that recommencing metformin will help shift that stubborn PCOS weight and recommence ovulation!!

Oh cool TK! Hope it works for you. Sounds like it did before

I've only been on it 3 weeks so I've still got to give it a couple more months. But already my cycle shortened by 10days so yay!
