Surgery or IVF First

Afternoon Ladies,

My new gyno has informed me that I should skip surgery on my endo and go straight to IVF. I've had a exploratory surgery a year ago and found that my left ovary is blocked and my right is 1/2 blocked and I have adhensions covering the left ovary/tube & my pouch is stuck to my bowel. My 1st gyno said I'll need more surgery. We then moved interstate & this gyno said go straight to IVF. Now I'll be 35 this May and my DH & I dont want to do IVF yet.

Should I insist on this gyno giving me corrective surgery? If so, what are some of the success stories of falling pregnany naturally after the surgery (how long after the surgery did one fall pg)?

Oh, if I do the surgery, how long will by tubes be open for. I know its different for everyone but just your experiences would be informative.

Hey Sam,

I would say to give surgery a shot first. Even if it doesn't help with your tubes, getting rid of the endo will increase the chances of success with IVF. (For some reason, when there is endo around, the embryos don't implant as well as when it is gone).

Do what you feel comfortable with. If you don't want to do IVF yet, don't do it yet. Any good FS should respect that and work with you.

I would also say have the surgery first . I tried for 11months with Kaitlyn - had endo removed and discovered only one of my tubes was opened. Dr advised IVF and we said we would try insemination first ( have you looked into that option yet?...means you are given help to ovulate and then when ovulating they insert your husbands swimmers straight in there!!).

Anyway we decided to try in semination for 3months before IVF ...we feel pregnant waiting for the new cycle to begin after the operation ..a miracle I know ..but it does happen.

I think you need to do what you feel most comfortable with first and it sounds like the operation is the one you would prefer. The one thing I have found is that once you tell the Dr what "YOU" want they are usually pretty ok with it and agree with your choice..

I started my treatment in NZ a few years ago. I had unexplained infertility, but had been told i probably had PCOS. Their plan was straight to Clomid, then on to IVF (I left before then). No surgery.

My lovely FS here said no way, lets go for a lap first and see what we find. And yes, lots and lots of endo for me.
He explained that having the lap before the IVF would increase the chance of falling naturally by over 50%. But the bonus was that even if it didn't happen naturally then endo can stuff up the IVF too, so best to have it out.

I think you should do a bit of research, and go back and discuss it with the Dr. Maybe he has a reason why he thinks IVF without the surgery.

Hi Sam...I would also definitely have surgery first. Unless the specialist believes your ovaries are deteriorating rapidly?

We were lucky to fall pregnant early this year. However, my wife had a 2nd laparoscopy scheduled in for early march. The fertility specialist would have then allowed us to try half a year as we had a 50% chance in our situation to conceive naturally during that timeframe. Only then would he have put us on IVF.

NO WAY surgery first... It will increase the chance of pregnancy hugely.. I had IVF and had endo (although it wasn't diagnosed when I had the IVF) and got a very poor response from IVF, both egg wise and succes wise. You have to remember that endo emitts dirty filthy toxins into the body.. how can the body be expected to produce a pregnancy with all that cr@p inside you??? Go the surgery.. it will increase your chances... Also google search ECCA and check out their site. It might give you a better insight..

What is ECCA stand for? I've googled ECCA & I get all this other crap christian charity stuff.
