Has anyone taken their families to Melbourne Cup (in Melbourne)? I am thinking of taking my family tomorrow but not sure f it is a family environment ?? Can you take a picnic and sit on the floor do you take fold out chairs or stand all day???
I have no idea what the experience would be like.. has anyone been ?

My brother and his friends had to pay quite a bit for their own picnic spot (about $130 per head). I'm pretty sure if you don't have a picnic spot you have to stand.

you'd probably find it on the VRC website hun

from what DH has said, it's really NOT a family environment - if you want family environment for races, you're better off going to a smaller meet that is family oriented (one of the local tracks has family carnival environment dec 27)

cup day is exxy, lots of people drinking heaps... prolly not great for a family day out...

You can try the VRC website. There will probably be over 100,000 people there and you have to purchase tickets beforehand.

Have a look at the Flemington Race Course webpage.

For general admission its $60 per adult and $10 per child.

For a picnic spot on the lawn its anywhere from $130-$240 per person. These tickets can only be purchased through ticketek.

ETA: My brother actually bought a "carpark" with his friend which is a 6x3 reserved picnic spot. They paid $200 each (there are 10 of them). It's so expensive!!!!!

Just to answer a few of your questions...even though you have decided not to go....

We are members of the VRC and I have still decided to bypass spring racing carnival.

You can sit and bring a picnic etc...that is if you get there at 5am! It is sooooo crowded, many drunken fools and for some reason it always rains on Cup Day!

Picnic races in country towns is a much better idea for bring Kiddies along to, heaps of space to run around and they often have children's activities.Just google 'country races Victoria" for locations.

I'm fairly sure that there is a family day at Flemington as part of the spring racing carnival? It might be this weekend?

The last race day being saturday is more fmaily orientated!

I'm working aat the races again this year so have pulled this snippet out of my events guide book!

The Melbourne Cup Carnival concludes with the Emirates Stakes Day featuring Victoria's Premier 1600m event, the Group 1 Emirates Stakes.

The meeting has a pleasent and relaxed atmosphere and is recognised as the carnival's "Family Day" boasting an array of children's activities and entertainment for all members of the family.

    You must pre-purchase your tickets.
    Stakes day pricing: Adult - $40, Kids - FREE or Family pass (2Adults & 2 kids) - $65
