Sometimes You CAN Choose Your Family

I was with XH for more than 10 years and moved to Aus from the UK.

He had a sister who in recent years I've called "Sista" and who I get on with like a house on fire.

There was never any doubt when XH and I split up, that we would keep in touch.

Anyway, I just find it incredibly endearing that whenever she meets our girls or sees photos that she says, "Oh, she must take after me for that."

Her long-term girlfriend (who I've also known for 10 years and get on like a house on fire with) has to point out, "Sally, you have no biological connection with these children, they can't TAKE AFTER you." This is said with love not enmity and we all roll around laughing, partly that we are all totally cool that YES, Sista doesn't have any biological connection with my daughters BUT they are still family. Family that we've chosen.

My DD2 is so obviously DPs daughter, but I only met him when she was 11!

We always joke that the stork got lost and I got his baby instead of him.

I think that is just beautiful and awesome! I grew up with "auntys" that were my mums best friends and to us they are family so i have my "cousins" so yep we picked our own family!
