Steve Biddulph - any feedback?

Steve Biddulph is speaking near us soon on bringing up boys. My DH was thinking of going but I was wondering if anyone has read any of his stuff or seen him speak and what kind of philosophies he promotes. How does he compare to say Robin Grille?
DH and I don't believe in tough love for boys so want to make sure it won't be like that.

You could not get anyone more anti-tough love than Steve Biddulph! I have his book Raising Boys and I think it is wonderful. My dad wasn't around much for my brother and after reading this book I understood a lot of my brother's teenage behaviour. I really think he is the ultimate gentle-parenting dad.

Google him - he has a website. He is quite opposed to fulltime long daycare for babies and toddlers but he speaks as someone who formerly used to promote it and then changed his mind after a few years.

I have both Raising Boys and Raising Girls which he wrote the Foreward to, and he is definately not about tough love hun. I don't know Robin Grille but in both Raising books, they talk about the different stages boys and girls go through and how you can nurture them during those times. The blurb on Raising Boys says

I LOVE Raising Boys and much to his surprise, so did my DH. I would LOVE to hear him speak, I would grab the opportunity if I were you. If you don't like tough love you are going to love Steve Biddulph. I think he really knows his stuff.

as the others have said - definatlt not 'tough love'. He has also written a book called 'manhood' which is great.

His 'raising boys' book is more about how vulnerable boys are. He discourages using childcare too soon, encourages you to wait till your boy is closer to 6 till you start them at school and emphasises the importance of dads being a good role model in male attitudes towards females (so a boy grows into a man with respect for his mother and thus other woman such as his partner etc).
The overall philosophy of Buddulphs teaching is to be aware of how male physiology works and how therefore with a knowledge of it, help them be emotionally sound.


Even if you dont go see him, get hold of his books - at least 'growing boys'. He`s easy to read and both you and your DH will get alot of it.

I have heard him speak and he is awesome. Loved it. It was all about men and how things have changed from how we used to parent (before industrialisation) until now. He's really good, worth going, speaks well, is entertaining and informative.
