I am looking at doing a vegie garden this year but I am going to do it in pots and containers. Just wondering if anyone does this and if they have any tips and tricks.
My mum grows vegies and herbs in 40cm diameter round self watering pots. I think she has a few types of lettuce, cherry tomatoes, shallots, chives, basil, parsley. You need to get a good soil and make sure you fertilise. HTH
Tomatos are excellent for pots - they love it, and you can move them around easily out of the sun.
Peas also as they are climbers do well in pots.
Herbs and fruit trees also flourish in pots.
Brocolli, Cauliflower and Cabbage would all do well in pots also.
Things like pumpkins, zucinnis probably not so much as they spread out along the ground and then fruit, so not practical for pots.
Strawberries are ace in pots too.
Good luck!! Growing your own veg is awesome - and they taste amazing!
Thanks girls I am so excited I am researching like crazy. We live on an acre (i know what your thinking ....why dont you have a huge vegie patch) but I want a vegie garden in pots - i just think it will be easier for me to maintain and move around etc and I know they need to be watered more often. I cant wait to take Georgia outside and show her how its all done and show he how much they have grown everyday and then what we can make/cook with food from our own garden.
ooh yeah, snow peas are fantastic, just put in some stakes and they will go crazy. Sounds like you guys will have a heap of fun. I have snapdragons and pansies in self watering pots and DD loves sitting on the patio looking at the pretty colours
last year I grew strawberries, lettuce and cherry tomatoes in those old styrofoam veggie boxes from the veggie shop. They grew beautifully and DS loved picking the strawberries every couple of days. I just bought some good quality potting mix and watered them everyday.
