Has anyone heard of being charged to have your medical records transferred to a new GP? We just got a bill saying if we wanted all records transferred it will be $45 per adult and $25 per child for 'photocopying, processing, handling and postage'. They are have all been digital records every time we are there.

My DH is in the military and we move a lot. In the 6 moves I have done in the last 10 years, I have never been charged to have my medical records transferred.
Besides, you must be able to have access to your own records. If they won't transfer them, I would ask for a copy of them for myself and take them yourself to the new medical centre.
I had mine transferred last year (but my old records were a mix of paper & electronic) and it cost me $30.
Usually if it's being transferred to another medical professional, there's no fee. That said, I'm having to pay to get my notes from Amelia's birth because apparently a change in hospy computer system means my midwives can't access them directly :-/ So I have to apply for them myself, as though I only want them for myself. DH has actually sent off an email asking the hospital to explain and he hopes they'll waive the fee. I don't see that happening but he wanted to...
Can't speak for their fees as where I used to work it was free...but even though all the records were on computer everything was printed out and sent.
I wonder if they charge a fee if your new clinic asked for a transfer of records? Might be worth asking.
One of our practices charges to have them sent over whether you request them personally or through another GP. The one we are with currently doesn't.
I was going to be charged $12, but I didn't bother getting them transferred into the new practice
I got the new GP to fax over a request to the old GP with my signature etc. I can try and ask if they will just give the files to me but I assume the charge is the same. It really makes me cranky because all up it's $95 for the 4 records and the kids have hardly gone to the GP and we have only being seeing them for 3yrs anyway.
Our GP moved from medical centre A to medical centre B last year. We were charged $5 or $10 (can't quite remember) each to transfer our records to the new medical centre. And told to allow at least 10 days.
Is there anything in the file you can't just tell the GP about?
