    Glandular Fever ...

    Hi all,

I haven't been feeling well for a couple of days now so i took myself off to the dotors yesterday. I have very swollen tonsils and the glands in my throat are very sore & it feels like i'm swallowing razor blades everytime i swallow.

I was given antibiotics and told if i was no better by tuesday he said he thinks i have glanular fever !! Has anyone had this before and can you tell me how long you had it? What did you do to help relieve the pain? Did you suffer any off the complications they say some people get? Any info would be greatly appreciated...i'm starting to stress a little.\

Thanks in advance for your help

I had glandular fever several years ago, I wasnt in terrible pain but I had so little energy I could barely walk to the toilet. It lasted about a week from memory however I felt bad for years until I visited a homeopath. She explained the glandular fever virus stays in your system for a really long time causing fatigue. She flushed it out within a few months and I felt much better but for years I was tired all the time and struggled to get out of bed. I would highly advise you to visit a homeopath/ naturopath if it is glandular fever, gps tend to just give you antibiotics and send you away.

Shar...thanks for your advice there about visiting a homeopath/naturopath this is definately something i will be doing if it is glandular fever- which i'm starting to think it is.
The doctor gave me antibiotics and said i should be 40% better this morning,80% better by this arvo and 100% better by tomorrow but i haven't gotten any better at all yet in fact i think it's just as bad if not a little worse. Going to ring the dr and see if he can do a blood test that way i will know for sure.

Westy, I had it a few years ago too. Firstly, rest is the most important thing you can do. If you don't rest it will get worse (I learnt that one the hard way, I kept working until I could no longer lift my arms above my head to tie my hair back, then I needed 4 weeks off work). So please rest before it gets worse. Also, avoid alcohol as GF affects your liver and drinking alcohol will increase the risk of complications.

Also bear in mind with the bt that GF will not always show straight away - sometimes it can be weeks or months before it shows up. DH and I both had bt and mine was clear, his showed GF, but we both had it - my bt showed positive later on, yet I had the symptoms first. The GP said that is not uncommon. So if you do get a negative bt, it doesn't mean you don't have it.

I really hope you are feeling better soon. Take care.

MelanieR...thanks i know i should be resting but that's not always easy with two young sons and a hubby that works 12 hours a day 6 days a week. I will see how i go and if he gets too much i think i might have to call mum and ask for some help.

Wow, so you can have GF and it still might not show up with a bt..interesting.Sounds as though it can get rather bad and lingers around for what must feel like an enternity.

Thanks i hope to be feeling better soon too,i never get sick so when i do it's not very good.

Yup I have GF and went to a naturopath as I felt miserable being so tired. My GP also upped my a/d's as it plays havoc with mood/depression too, which I have really noticed bigtime. I am struggling to take the iron tonic though, its putrid, and the other herbs in a capsule I am doing fine with. It's called astragalus and is practitioner only, so you have to see someone to get it. I am also taking In-Liven and Berry Radical, I was doing great for a couple of days then forgot a couple of days and went majorly downhill again, so here I am again trying to remember to take everything and feeling dead tired! It takes some time to recover from, you really, really need to rest to avoid chronic fatigue syndrome but try telling a mum to rest, just before school holidays when it's about to get worse - I don't think so!

Geez the symptoms you have are exactly what I had Westy. Now I am left feeling very fatigued and I tire easily. How do you find a good naturopath/homeopath?

Thanks ladies for all of your help, i can't say the antibiotics have sorted out the throat as i still have a white film over my left tonsil and it looks and feels revolting. Not as bad with the razor blade feelings now tho which i'm very greatful.
Still very tired though but i guess that's from having a few shocking nights sleep...having to get up and have medicine every 6 hrs and pin relief in between it all takes it's toll thats for sure.

I hope you don't have it!! I had it for 6 months when I was 14 and it still keeps coming back. If your tonsils look gunky and gross then it probably is tonsilitis (which can make you feel like you want to die all by itself ) Maybe you need to get stronger antibiotics.....
