Snoring & Choking on his tongue.

DP has always snored, it's annoying at times but i have kind of gotten used to it now and often wake up if he STOPS snoring, i think it's a way of checking on him.

Over a month ago now one night i woke up and it sounded like he was going to hurl , the compassionate woman i am asked if everything was ok while thinking "if he spews in this bed i'm going to KILL him".. he kept making a gagging noise but wouldn't answer me, then just rolled over and went back to sleep.

In the morning i asked WTF he was doing and he told me he woke up and he was choking on his tongue!

DP is over weight, he knows this.. he works 7 days a week as a carpenter, quite physical work, we don't exactly eat badly (plenty of veg, red meat, water etc)
I have asked him to go to the GP to get checked out but he says all they will say is to loose weight... he could do this if he started boxing or the gym again but really he has no time.. working 7 days a week, long hours, he hardly sees us as it is.

What could this be, is it best he get checked?
Any other ideas, i almost want to 'scare' him into going.. saying i want my kids to have a dad and i don't want to wake up next to him choking on his tongue again!

my step dad has the exact same thing he actually stops breathing sometimes and he snores the roof off the house my mum has actually put him in a seperate room due to the snoring thats how loud he is..

the dr referred him to do a sleep apneia i think thats how you spell it and its where the hook them up to machines and stuff and monitor him over night with ppl constantly checking him.. the specialist will then give him some alternatives to help him and you get a good night sleep..

Sounds like DP, honestly when ppl come to stay they comment on how on earth i can sleep in the same bed as him.. you can hear him upstairs snoring when your downstairs watching TV.. it's like a mak truck in the house.
I seriously need him to get checked but he wont.

oh my gosh that is exactly the same thing my mums house is double brick and you can hear him in the kitchen from upstairs its bad and his been like this for bout 2 yrs now he needs this oxygen thing to help him breath at night due to he is also over weight and apparently it helps him stop... but its expensive and his also stubborn!!

maybe record him while his asleep and show him in the morning or maybe result to show him how bad it is and tell him he has to sleep in a seperate room till he fixes it thats what my mum did and still does lol

Have recorded his snoring before and EVERYONE tells him about it, it's getting worse, especially after soem drinks, 1 of his mates stayed at MIL's after they had been out for the night, he got up and caught a taxi home cos DP was so loud...
He just wont listen, we don't have a spare bed (it's at our old house for now) and ho be honest i'm used to it now, it's only a PITA to me when i get up to the girls and then have to try and go to sleep with him already snoring.

It could be sleep apnea. DH had it, it was so scary but he lost loads of weight and now doesnt do it.

I agree with Tinks.

It's very important that he goes to GP to get this checked out. I am not sure if anyone watched the Biggest Loser, one of the guys on their had such bad sleep apnoea he had to sleep with a machine to help him breath over night. Once he lost alot of the weight, he no longer needed the machine.
They may even suggest he attend a sleep clinic to see what is going on.

thanks girls.. i def think it could be sleep apnea, even his mum said he needs to get it checked but he just wont make an appointment.
He thinks it's a wast of time and that all they will tell him is to loose weight.
He wont take the time off work to go and get checked - how can i convince him?
I cook every night, we have veggies, red meat, salads, pasta's etc i just don't know where to start in helping him loose weight.. like me if he exercises he looses weight but at the moment he's working 7 days a week and often leaving at 6:30am and not getting home til 6:30 - 7pm
I am thinking of asking him to have Sunday off and we can go for walks or something, every now and then if he's home early we alk around the property but with DD1 walking it's not exactly a workout.

I just don't know what to do, might be nice to sleep with no snoring...

Perhaps you just need to be really blunt with him and say that if he wants to live to see his girls grow up, then he needs to see the Dr. Make the appointment for him and then tell him when he needs to turn up. Especially given the fact that he nearly choked on his tongue. I had to do this for DH once when he was sick and I was concerned, he had no choice.
The other thing to look at with his meals is portion size. You are cooking healthy foods, it just wont make any difference if his portion sizes are still big. Good quality sleep can have a very positive impact on weight. I have heard that getting enough sleep can aid in losing weight along with good diet and smaller portion sizes. Unfortunately he is not getting good quality sleep by the sounds of it.
It really is tough when he works such long hours. I hope he listens to you.

If its sleep apnoea, which it sounds like, he's never getting into REM sleep, because his breathing is stopping and his body is waking him up all night. You'll find he won't be able to lose weight on his own, because his body simply won't provide the energy required - he's basically not getting any sleep! He needs to be referred to a sleep clinic, where they will monitor him overnight to see how many times he stops breathing. I don't know the exact numbers, but if its considered serious, he'll be given a CPAP machine, which will force oxygen into his nose/mouth through the night, and give him a proper nights sleep. You'll be amazed at the difference once he starts getting a decent sleep, and he'll start losing weight as well, which will eventually mean he won't need the machine

that's me ZF. I choke on my tongue and snore like a mak truck too.

he may even need surgery. It could be his nose, his throat. He needs a referral to an ENT to check all the physical side of things too.

I have a deviated septum, which is which i sleep with my mouth open, my tongue falls back, i choke and snore. But i also have hypersomnia (too much sleep disorder).

If he goes to an ent first, they can refer him to a sleep study from there.
