Specsavers pricing etc.

I've posted this on the official Specsavers Facebook, because they seem to get back to people quickly there, but my post seems to have disappeared :-/ Anyway, hopefully someone here can help me...

Okay, so I think I've chosen my potential new frames, assuming I need glasses at all. BUT I have a few questions:

With the two designer pairs for $199+ thing, does it *have to* be two designer pairs? I've fallen in love with a designer pair and most of the others I'm considering are generic. Can I do that?

If not, I assume I can get two different designers' frames. Is that right? So an Alex Perry pair and Red Or Dead for example?

The other question I asked on FB I've worked out for myself (do both have to be the same price, how does it work if they're not?) but I also wanted to know how quickly I'd get my new glasses once I've ordered them.

I got mine a while ago but I chose 2 pairs from 2 different designer ranges. 1 was red or dead reading glasses and the others were sunglasses (can't remember range name)

So long as both are marked in the same "2 for" price range it's ok. If one pair is in the "2 for $249" and the other "2 for $199" I think they'll let you get them but charge the higher rate.

Be careful with additional charges. I ended up paying over $600 for 2 pairs. Polarized lenses on my sunnies and anti glare on reading (because I look at a computer all day) aren't covered in the basic pricing.

Teni, we just got DD1 glasses from specsavers, she got two pairs which totalled the price of the most expensive pair. Then the little extras cost more. Our glasses took about 10days to get back to us. Yours may be quicker being that you are in vic and thats where the specsaver place is where they put the glasses together.
All up DD1's glasses cost us about $240, that was two pairs, then one pair had tint, which I have now had to take those ones back and pay more to get them changes to just plain lens because it was too dark for her.

I got 2 for $199. I talked them down, got one generic specssavers brand (men's lol) and one pair of designer sunglasses. It took one and a half or two weeks I believe.

My son just got 2 pair, but ended up paying
500+ for his, I'm not happy with the sales person, he said he was looking at the 2 for 149 range, bearing in mind my son is 18 and on apprentice wages, but she led him over to the 2 for 299 range and talked him into those, by the time they added the cost of his lenses (which they didn't charge for last time) it came to over $500... That's a week and a half of his wages...

Yikes! I reckon you should go complain, it's in the T&Cs that the lenses are included in the price (though only single vision ones, multifocals are more...)

I use specsavers for dd but they were super expensive with her last pair, they are bifocals and her last pair broke and they didn't want to help, so we will try Laubman and Pank next time as they have a 1 year kids garuntee.

I'm not at all happy with Specsavers - the optician there told me it was perfectly normal for DD2 to have serious headaches when she wears her glasses and that the script was correct. They said that she was trying it on and that I must make her wear them despite the fact they made her so ill when she wore them she couldn't eat and lost 5kgs in a month!

Took her to an independent optician and they immediately referred her to a specialist and for an MRI. She had a lens replacement in 2006 and the lens has slipped in her eye so she's having more surgery to remove it. Went back to Specsavers to tell them this and was told I must be wrong as its not possible!!

They also didn't know how to deal with the fact she has one full width bifocal in one side of her glasses. Was probably just that individual optician but I won't go back to them again, such a shame as we always used them in England.

Wow!!! Sounds like a terrible optician! I have extremely poor eyesight that I've been told by independent and SS will likely need surgical correction one day soon. I've been at SS for 2-3 years now, they never give me my script to its full strength straight away, always wait for my eyes to adjust to one at 80% first, and don't ever charge me extra for the second set of lenses a few months later.

Given they're franchised, I'm fairly certain there's good ones and bad ones. They at least seemed incredibly friendly at my local store, hopefully that continues all the way through

DH had a loose screw in his glasses a few years ago, we took them to a Specsavers to ask them about it as they fixed it for free! The glasses weren't even from there, so we were pretty happy about that

As others have said be aware of those 'hidden' extra costs.. I have definitely experienced this lol!

I went to SS for the 2 pairs for $199 and it ended up costing me over $500 out of pocket (I had top of range phi at the time & hadn't claimed), for the little extras like thinner & lighter lenses. I didn't even get one of the pairs turned into sunnies. I was a first time customer too.

I'm about to go to OPSM for my new glasses, mainly because they were amazing with my viral conjunctivitis earlier this year, got me referred to an opthamologist, saw me every 3 days for 6 weeks and only ever bulk billed me for the appointments even though I was having extensive testing done every week (including pressure testing etc).

i used to go to an independant optomerist and glasses for my DS cost me out of pocket over $400!!
he lost them 2 months later

so now i take my kids to SS- It costs me $68 for them both to get 2 pairs of glasses each with the anti glare coating on them all!

I needed to get new glasses for myself but i wear contacts 99% of the time. So I got 2 pairs again for myself - only one with reflective tinting and I was out of pocket $14
all our glasses were from the $199 and $249 range too

I then get my contacts online directly from the Manufacturer which saves me $$$$ ($52 for 3 months rather than $175)
anyone who wears contacts should check this company out- you just have to enter your own specs in that I also got checked when I went to SS and ordered my glasses!!

So besides lack of any personal service as the staff recite their script to me each time they serve me- I saved Heaps of $$$$$ going there
just make sure you ask for the cheapest price out of pocket you can get and they will tell you what will bring in the best rebates from your PHI

I'm fairly certain I won't need a strong prescription, so I don't see me getting hit with too many extras.

Oh, another question - when do I pay for the glasses? I've got the money now, but if it can be put off until my next pay it would be heaps better...

Generally you put deposit down and pay balance when you pick up (at least that's what I did)
