Hi there, I had Gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy and yes you do have to fast for the 2hour test.. You also have to follow a high carb diet for 3 days leading up to the test and then you can't eat for 12 hours before the test so if you have your test at 8am you can't eat from 8pm the night before (except tap water).
Have you booked your appointment? Usually you have to book and when you do they give you a leaflet on what you need to do.
    Hope that helps. Good luck

It tends to be something the doctors 'forget' to mention lol. I had mine about 2 weeks ago and when i was there an old man came in to have his done but no one had told him he needed to fast or be on the diet so the poor old thing wasted his morning when it would have been so much easier if the doctors just gave him the info to start with, i don't know why they don't, they only have to hand you a piece of paper with the info on it.. oh well thats my little vent lol.
Good luck with it alll, fingers crossed you don't have it!

Hollye, do make sure you eat lots of carbs in the three days before hand. If you don't it can make your results higher than they should be. GL.

That's ridiculous that you're not told! I organise these tests and I've never heard of a special diet for it - I send information to the patients too! I'm outraged that this is going on, it's so stupid.

Have you had the hour-long test with lucozade? In pregnancy you should only ever have the two-hour test if your sugars are too high with the lucozade test because fasting isn't great when you're pregnant.

Have you also been warned about the risk of contracting type II diabetes? If you get GD you have a 50% chance of getting type II diabetes in the next 10 years so you need a 2-hour test every 1-2 years or prior to any subsequent planned pregnancy. If you are warned about this you can do diet and lifestyle things to reduce the risk, if you don't know then all of a sudden you get diabetes and if it goes undiagnosed that's REALLY dangerous.

    Hiya Hollye,

My experience (from my posts on the topic ) was that different places make you do different things. I did my 2 hour test through Dorevitch & and they didn't make me do the special diet at all, just the fasting. So saying, I looked at what I'd eaten and it was prolly pretty high carb anyway! And yes, I wondered the same thing, did you do the screening GCT test (the 1 hour?).

Ask at the place you're booked into re their requirements. And you do have to sit there for the whole 2 hours - you can't wander off & go shopping

And mwah to you, fingers crossed you don't have it :goodluck2:

I had an ultrasound at my appt today (34 weeks) and bubs is measuring 7lbs 7ozs already. My obstetrician said that as my 28 week GTT was normal it's possible that I have GD but it hasn't shown up until later than the 28 week mark?

For this reason she's requested that I have the 2 hour test done next Tuesday but I too wasn't told anything about a special diet. Both my obstetrician and the person I spoke to at IMVS when making the appointment told me to fast 12 hours before the appt, can only have water, and that I will be there for 2 hours with a fasting blood test done when I arrive, followed by the drink, another blood test an hour later and another an hour after that!

Am now wondering if I should be eating a high carb diet as i've been recommended to avoid carbs (particularly later in the day) in an attempt to reduce bubs growth.

Im having the 2 hour one and skipping the 1hour one coz type 2 is in my family. I chose to do this as i want a more accurate result. I got tested before i fell pregnant and it was fine. Yes i know all the risks and ive been seeing a dietition every couple of weeks to keep everything in order. Theres no more i can do now than what im doing. Good ol genes.. i will just do the best i can.

Belfie - no i have to sit there.. no working it off which is going to annoy the **** outa me yeh i didnt get told about the high carb thing either.... mmmmmm and the answer to the 1 hour one is up there ^^^^ mwah xoxo

it may be up there, but my preggie brain ain't.. tehe.

And if it helps any, another girl on here was like me (Type II in family, had BMI over 25 when got PG, was feeling thirsty, weeing heaps, failed GCT...etc) and was convinced she'd have it, and got the all clear. So even though I got it, not everyone who is at risk does! But good to get yourself checked out, sounds like you're doing a brillo job looking after yourself & bubba girl!
