    Oh-oh

    I have my GTT tomorrow

I have been feeling off for a few weeks now and well - I have been monitoring my sugar and it seems pretty high. Fasting sugars are 6.0-6.9. That and the fact in 1 month I jumped 4kg!

Strangley enough, at the begining of the pregnancy I felt fine and my fasting sugars were about 4.3-4.4.

I have cut out all sugar and bad fats (like butter) and gone back to diet drinks and heathlier foods. Crossing fingers this works.

6 - 6.9 fasting bsl would make my diabetes nurse have a heart attack, it does sound high, i think they like it to be under 5.5 (well throught the Northern Hospital here in Melb they do) Goodluck with your test!! I got alot of support from the girls in here over the last few weeks (thanks ladies ) so keep us informed!

It does make you feel ill, its hard to explain how you feel tho. I started with a dry tongue, cracked lips, tiredness but not being able to drop off to sleep, thirsty and just blah when ever I felt my sugars were high. I started feeling like that at about 17 weeks but when they did the test at 17 weeks it was normal, same thing happened with my son..it was like I was getting the symptoms but it wasn't showing up in my bloods. They eventually found it at 36 weeks with my son, and this time at 28 weeks but this time I'm on insulin.

I have cut out weetbix all together, bananas and peaches and my bsl's with 19 units of insulin in the morning and 13 at night are now stablized..only took a month of insulin tweaking and 7 weeks of diet monitoring.

And I am 90 per cent energetic! I have been happier and socialising with my inlaws and family again instead of hiding in the bedroom in a bad mood. I'm also not eating every hour like I was when my sugars were high. Now I can eat every four hours no problems..what a change it's made to finally get them down. I had no idea how unwell i was feeling both physicaly and mentally for that whole 7 weeks!

So my big no no's are weetbix, bananas, peaches and spaghetti

Oh and I'm negative for LADA!!! I burst into tears when the endo told me, and he asked me why I was crying and I said *ahem* 'It means I can still drink beer' that sounds horrible but thats just what flew out of my mouth I'm not an alcoholic or anything I just really love a cold one on a hot day..and for the last 3 months hubby has been brewing his own and I haven't been able to enjoy any :/

Also my Ob (not my Endo/Diab/Ob) says that bubs is perfectly fine size wise, and that he isn't concerned about my not putting weight on. I've put 10 kilos on he reckons thats enough.

I also got my referral for my c section today, so I'm guessing they do c sections at 38 weeks? In which case..I meet my lil girl in 3 weeks! Argh!

Linzy, I know what you mean, I died when I saw that my BS was 6.9 this morning. I am clearly doing something wrong. I love love love peaches - so maybe thats my problem, I did have one yesterday.

I had been diagnosed as type 2 diabetic, pre pregnancy - but this managed to clear up when I had gastric banding. I lost 30kg. Unfortunatley during the IVF process and now pregnancy most of my weight has come back - as you cannot have the gastric band tight during pregnancy or if you go under anaesthetic.

Seems my diabetes has reared its ugly head!

I am sure I will come up 100% for gestational, Whats the process now? did your OB put you on insulin? or did you have to see someone else?

Oh sounds like a rough road you've traveled:/

One of the girls on here has mentioned that the morning bsl is more based on hormones than what youve eaten and my endo told me that too so it's not all your fault!! hehe but yeah peaches and bananas were baddies for me, yet i can eat a handfull of strawberries? weird!

The process that I've been through 4 times in the last 4 years has been the glucose tolerance test where you fast overnight, then have blood taken, then drink the sugary drink, an hour later have blood taken, then another hour have more blood taken.. I think it might be a lil different in different states and hospitals but I've had the same tests in both WA and VIC

If your positive they first try to control your sugars with diet, but I have heard most women nowadays end up on insulin. I ended up seeing a Diabetes Educator, Diabetes Dietician and Diabetes Ob/ Endo who actually most of them all told me the same things, it was the educator that put me on insulin tho. But again it might be done differently in different states and hospitals maybe if its a private hospital it might be different again.

And I just noticed your in Perth! I moved over here two years ago and am very homesick! I am missing King Edward Hospital the most as the staff, obs and system was free, fast and very personal. Here the hospital I go to is also free but blood tests and scans aren't! I wait between 2 and 4 hours for one appointment I hate the hospital I'm at at the moment but I only have a few weeks left

sloane: Not sure if it's 38 weeks, i'm hoping it is so I can hold my lil one earlier but will find out Monday what the date is

Hi All. I wrote a bit of a first time rant, but I took to long to post it and it was lost

Anyway, Hi. I've been reading this thread for a little bit. A week ago I had my GCT, and then got the call saying I needed to follow-up with a GTT. From my reading on-line (and my knowledge by being a medical scientist) I knew that there was a good chance I had GD. By getting a high reading on the GCT I knew there was a high chance I was not one of those lucky people who come up negative in the GTT. And I was right. My fasting was 5.2, which my doc was fine with, but my 2 hr was 11.2! So now I wait to see the Diabetics Educator at the Angliss and go through the process of obtaining readings and trying to control my numbers with my diet. My doc's quietly indicated there is a chance I'll go on insulin. The way she said it and the context of the conversation - I think she thinks I definately will. She wants my levels to be under 7 (she told me the educator would expect more, but that my doc was fine with <7). The question I have, is with such a high BSL as 11.2 in the GTT, am I going to be able to get it below 7 through diet alone? I'm not optimistic.

I realise some women on here really want to carry their baby to term, but I actually like the idea of it coming a little earlier (if need be). I might only be 29 weeks, but I already just feel so uncomfortable (first pregnancy!!). The thought of it being 8 or 9 weeks away instead of 11 or 12 feels more bearable.

I guess I will find out more on Monday followed by the BSL monitoring. Fun times ahead!
