MiniMax, I found pasta dishes to be fantastic for my readings. Do you have to take readings? Or just watch the diet?

Elenia,How have your breakfast readings been going? I found that breakfast was my worst meal of the day. Everything I tried I would get high readings for. Insulin made it so much easier.

As for myself, it's been a stressful time. I went on insulin which really took that pressure off. Up until 36 weeks however, my breakfast insulin went up as my readings started going over 7 again. After 36 weeks, everything evened out and was looking good. Then I was in a car accident and was taken to emergency at the Royal Melbourne, followed by 2 days observation in the Women's. Baby was fine and monitored daily with CTG. I had a little bruising and was shaken, mainly relieved that the baby was ok.

So now i'm 37 weeks pregnant and today had another CTG (just to check the baby is still ok with me being on insulin), but it didn't go so well. Baseline reading was fine, but the baby wasn't very active for them to see fluctuations. So next week I go in to do it all again. Then I see the doc on Wednesday where she will picking which day to book me in for induction (which looks like either next Friday or the following Monday).

In the mean time however, my readings have been a little over the place. I went Hypo on Wednesday and I woke up with a fasting reading of 4 today. I'm really feeling like the sooner we seperate the better the both of us will be!! Think I better get that bag fully packed!

    Hi Crums

Thanks for asking. Actually it isnt going too badly. As long as I avoid the wheat products they keep suggesting and that I keep trying to alternate with.

My fasting morning one is still borderline. So I think that one will be taken out of my hands (it was last time too). As for the day. If I eat my normal breakfast of 1 pc rye toast and soemthing with it I am ok. I then avoid drinking my morning tea until I have my reading and that works better. As much as the oats is supposed to be best it is giving me a horrible migraine and I am borderline with or without the fruit on it. So I will avoid it. As for the rest of the day i am fine actually. I have had a bit of cake at some parties I went to and my readings are still great. So we will see.

I am sorry you are having a rough time of it. And it is no wonder you are stressed and your levels are all over the place. The worry of the accident would be very detrimental to keep your stress down and to keeping your readings sane. It is very good that you are both well. And dont worry I can understand wanting to bring the baby out early too. Sometimes it just feels like you will have much more control if you can hold them in your arms. Better start packing!!! Try to relax. I know that is easy to say. Find a good book. And let nature take its course. You are almost there.

    Hey everyone,

Had my GTT done on Saturday - and the nurse rang this morning to tell me I have GD. I'm 26 weeks as of yesterday. Just introducing myself so I can subscribe to this thread.

g'day Seachange - sorry to hear you've got GD but at least you'll be able to manage it and look after yourself & bubba. I don't currently have GD (that I know of) but had it last PG. I don't know how many girls are in here atm, but a few of us who've had it previously tend to stick our noses in here
How are you feeling about it all? Any partic questions you have?

    Cheers,
    Belfie

    Hi Belfie,

Not really that shocked as I have PCOS and the GTT results on their own the last time around was fairly high. DH also has diabetes so I know the routine.

However I'm also feeling quite down about myself atm - having to go to a new GP today and explaining all my preconditions made me feel fairly pathetic (my usual one is on holidays). And work is going to be oh so happy that I need to have another day off to see an Endo and dietician.

I'm seeing the Obstetrician tomorrow so I may have some questions then. Thanks for asking though!

So now I have a few questions - those that have had GD, when did you finish work? Did you have a VB or caesarian? Were you induced? Did it have an effect on the BSL of your baby when he/she was born?

    Thanks for your help.

hi seachange. sorry to hear you have GD - although i found it to be more of a PITA than anything else!

i was diagnosed with GD around 22 weeks from memory. i was diet controlled until around 30 weeks then on insulin twice a day. my answers to your questions are....(sorry in advance for being a bit verbose!)

    when did you finish work?
it was around 32.5 weeks. i was planning to leave at 34 & took my annual leave owing before that. the main impact it had on my work was the number of appts i had to go to. i went public & had fortnightly appts from when i was diagnosed with the obs but sometimes the endo & dr appt wouldn't coincide so i'd go two weeks in a row. i hope that makes sense! my work was quite flexible & i just worked from home on the days i had hospital appts.

Did you have a VB or caesarian? i had a VB - it did end up being an assisted birth (explained more below).

Were you induced? i was. i really, really didn't want to be but in the end i kind of gave in. i also had high BP that was diagnosed at 6 wks PG so i was kind of on their 'hit list'i guess! i had weekly monitoring from about 33 or 34 weeks - CTG & scans to check for movement & also the size of the baby & the amount of fluid around him. i managed to negotiate a 'reprieve' until i was 40 weeks. alot of people are very happy to be induced prior to this & i know there can be medical reasons but i felt that the weekly monitoring (some people also have to go twice a week) really showed that there was no real cause for concern and the BP wasn't causing problems either. i did a lot of reading about being induced & what could happen as a result. i didn't escape completely - i had an epidural & a forceps delivery but whether that matters very much depends on your own personal opinion.

Did it have an effect on the BSL of your baby when he/she was born? DS did have low BSL when he was born & as a result he was given formula as his first feed. i still feel quite conflicted about this & i really wish i'd been more aware of what was going on. they continued to monitor his BSL until he had a certain number of 'good' readings (above 3 i think, or maybe 4).

hope that helps a little - if you have any questions, just let me know!

Went and saw the Endocrynologist on Friday with the dietician. I'm now up to 12 units, which is making me feel quite spaced. Unfortunately I got a reading this morning of 6.4. I've decided to try and experiement with supper, as I think I am having too many carbs there and this may be triggering the high overnight readings. The Dietician and Endocrynologist have left me to experiment for 3 weeks to see if I can get the levels down. The other issue is that after lunch I am getting readings of 4.8 etc. So obviously something is not quite right with my carb intake. Shall try again tonight and see if the new supper makes a difference.

My HT Admin should be delighted that I will be available again on Fridays. This will take me up to week 8 of term, and week 32 of the pregnancy. Basically the downhill run until I take maternity leave after week 11 of term (35 of the pregnancy). Given that I will be expected to prepare lessons, mark exams and write reports, I am loathe now to go off any earlier. If I'm working I may as well be paid to do so.

    Hi Didi,

Sorry to hear you've got GD this time. Haven't got time for a long reply, but check the link about 1/2 way down this page called "Healthy eating for gestational diabetes Information Sheet" - it's a great little PDF
Gestational diabetes... Diabetes Australia - NSW
I found that gave me some good help and ideas for what to eat, and the main other thing is that what gives one person high BSL's will be fine for another person - it is very individual, so you need to just experiement and you'll learn what sends you high & doesn't. GL will BBL

My Endocrynologist was much stricter - must be under 5.5 when fasting, must be under 7 after meals. Hence the insulin
