Melbel - Thanks for that, I am so in two minds about it all... I will wait and see what happens a little down the track... if there is any medical reason to induce though I will do it. the safety of bubs outweighs anything else!
Just popping in to say hello.....I got a call from my OB this morning to say my GCT reading was a little high at 8, so I need to have the fasting GTT done. I'm having it done tomorrow......since I get so stressed and anxious about these things, I figured the sooner I did it, the better.
I didn't have any issues with the GCT when PG with Jacob (my reading was 5.something) so this is all a bit new and I must admit I'm a bit scared and freaked out.....
^ Good luck Melinda, many people fail the one hour and pass the longer test - an 8 isn't too bad so I would think your odds are good of coming through the 2 hour just fine ;)
I went for my 2 hour test this morning - I have previous history of GD so we went straight for the long test. I feel like crap after it. I've been monitoring at home for the last few weeks and my levels have been ok so I'm hoping I might dodge a bullet with this preg (like Skorpy - congratulations btw! I would be OVER the moon! :D )
Thankyou Flea and mel :) It was a lovely surprise,seeings how big i am.But had my scan and it seems im carry slightly increased Fluid.I had this problem with my son on my first pregnancy.
The problems that may be causing it apprently are:
The baby isnt swollowing the amnotic fluid properly
My kidneys are producing too much urine and with the babys unrine too.
Problems that MAY occur:
My waters may break early
The umbilical cord could come out before the baby (Eek!!)
Baby having breathing problems.
But like i said all was fine with my first pregnany when the ultrasound said i had increased fluid and i suppose they have to give you problems that MAY occur as a precaution.But i am having another scan in 2 weeks to keep an eye on it.
Can anyone tell me what your levels should actually be, i.e. what range is considered normal???
For a"normal" person a random test should show levels between 3 -7 mmol/l. 8 is borderline but you are pregnant and all pregnant women hit insulin resistance so you won't get a definitive answer without a full GTT. All people can throw a spiked sugar every now and then which is why they want to do the long test where they get a series of results which gives them a curve graph to look at. This shows them how your pancreas is responding over time if that makes sense. For example a fasting level might be say 4.2, the one hour eeading might be 8 but then the two hour reading which is when you have maximum absorption of a meal might be 6.3. You get a normal post meal spike at one hour but at two hours you should be recovering. It is if you are not recovering properly that shows your pancreas is stressed...or in my case totally stuffed...hehe!! A GCT reading of 8 is nothing to worry about on its own so try not to stress too much...I am sure you will be fine :) Hope this the info you were looking for

97% Fat Free, Low GI of 46 or 48 (writing is pretty small) - Melbel can give a better indicator of how low that is... I think the mid-range mark is like 55 ???, and 13.5g carbs per serve, which is less than one slice of bread (15g) - at least if my memory is correct it is
And best of all, it taste pretty good.
The figures above are from the Caramel Triple Swirl container... other flavours might differ a little

Thats' pretty much right Abs....is at the higher end of the low range...medium GI starts at 50...so is a good one to pick......bread used to have 15 grams of carb Abs but these days is all those new high tin styles so most are 20 grams a slice....they've even had to design new "big" slice cheese to fit...hehe
Can I just say that I always eat the Peters Vanilla Light & Creamy!! I actually prefer it over full-fat icecream!!! I always have low fat milk etc too because I have a bit of a lactose intolerance that upsets my tummy if I have too much dairy. I'm ok with full strength yoghurt and some cheese (but cheese only in small doses IYKWIM).
So yeah, I can recommend that ice cream! LOL
Melbel - thanks SO much for that info. I found out today that my readings were 5.5 pre-drink, and then 2 hours later, it was 6.6 - so I guess I'm on the higher side of normal, but still within range, yeah?

Yeah...it should be fine.....don't know about the fibre content...we get the 'country grains loaf' from bakers delight but that's just because i get indigestion from all the preservatives in supermarket bread.
Well I am just SOOOO proud of myself at the moment...
I have been controlling the GD very well, I have not had a high BSL reading yet! and last night when we went out for dinner for a friends b-day, I ordered a chicken dish, minus the cream and the chips!!! I also was fine saying no to the pavlova b-day cake!!!
I thought this would be a lot harder, but really it's quite easy to controll... I think that knowing that if I don't do the right thing, it can in turn affect my baby and the type of labour/birth that I have, has given me the right foot uo the a$$ that I needed...

Wow, just found this forum and thread. I have been having so much fun (NOT!!) adjusting to the whole idea of having GD. It has only been a couple of weeks since diagnosis, and I am still cranky and upset about it. Is that Pathetic? Having been someone who has never had worry about what she puts her mouth, to going to obsessing about what and how much is sending me a little over the edge. I went back to the GD team last tuesday to be informed that before my pregnancy was over that I would proably have to have insulin injections. Which I was oh so delighted about.
Sorry I have just launched right on in here. Can you tell this whole thing is making me more then a little cranky?

I had my test done today for Gestational Diabetes and they advised me this afternoon that I am just on the border. I have to go in on Monday to talk about diet and will need to check my blood levels for a week. What I want to know is... should I be able to 'watch' my diet a little bit to change this. Is there anyway I will still be able to have a 'normal' size baby or will he keep on growing big and I will have to be induced.
I was advised today that he was currently sitting at the 70% and should only be in the 8pound range which is fine with me as I was 8pd2. Yet last fortnight he was 93% so I started watching what I was eating already. I dont know if I am making any sense here or not. LOL....
Basically what I want to know... if I watch what I eat from now on is there any chance I can have a normal 8pound something baby at the normal time or am I destined to be induced early or have a biggy??

HI Christie, I'm assuming that you are around the 28week mark in your pregnancy? In answer to your questions every one is different. Some women have big babies, some can control the GD with diet and exercise, and some- like me - no matter how strict you are with your diet, will need to have insulin. The best advice I can give you is watch your carbohydrate intake, stick to low GI foods, like mulitgrain bread, brown rice, sweet potato instead of potatoes, weet bix, oats. The carbs affect you the most, and you just have to be careful with the serves you have. and I have had to eat regularly, like breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, then supper, other wise I end up having a hypo! I have eaten more fruit and veges in the last couple months then I have in my whole life! Lots of salads and stirfries, fruit salad. But different foods affect different people. so it is a case by case assessment. It can be very overwhelming to get your head around, well it was for me, and now here I am with only 5 days to go, and feeling like an old hand at it. I have had to have extra scans to assess the babies growth, and while he is a little bigger then dates (about a week) he hasn't been off the scale. When you have had some more assessment, and if the results show that you are developing GD, i'll be happy to pass on any information that I have. I found some great recipes that were low GI and diabetic specific.

I know I have had my babe now, but the whole experience of having GD is still very fresh in my mind. in fact I have to take myself off to have my 6week GTT (oops...seem to be running a week late!) Feel free to ask me any questions - it was pretty daunting in the beginning, and I got pretty upset about it all. but being on the other side of it, with a good result as far as my little man is concerned, makes it all seem so long ago.
I have seen another lady posting who has GD now, but for the life of me I can't remember which forum it was. if I find it again I will post it here.

The hardest thing for me was the fact that no matter how hard i tried mine was not able to be diet controlled. But everything is going great for me now.

I too was diagnosed with GD, only 2 days ago. i have been feeling pretty down in the dumps. i go and see a diabetic doctor this afternoon which hopefully will put my mind at ease a bit. i wil be 27 weeks pregnant on fri. i didn't get GD with my first pregnancy. i will let you no how i go.

i got diagnosed about a 2 weeks ago - went to the diabetes clinic & did everything right but ended up having to start insulin yesterday - the drs are pretty sure i had it with my first baby as she was 11lb 4oz or 5.1kg - im doing ok with all the testing i have to do though it was really low before lunch & i didnt feel good at all - a bit scary since i live by myself with my daughter so hopefully the insulin will even everything out - im 27 weeks too so a fair way to go still

Went and seen the diabetes doctor. He was really helpful. He said i will need to go on insulin as my reading was so high. I go on monday to the diabetes clinic. I'm sure they will put my mind at ease even more. Still its scary stuff. Feeling ok. Talk soon.

Thought I would post in here to let you know my story. I had GD and was testing sugar levels 4 times a day and insulin 3 times a day before meals. If anyone would like to ask questions, go for it, I'm happy to help out where I can!
What I would like to add to this thread is all the doctors were telling me I would probably have a big baby, I was freaking out about that!! Being my first I found it all very daunting, but I had a ultrasound at 34 weeks and it showed my little girl was quite small, then I was induced at 39 weeks 5 days and she was only 5lbs 13oz (2.6kg). Then when the Obs. came around to give her a checkup on the third day she asked if I had got the dates wrong as her genetils looked 3 weeks premmie! I was quite surprised by this and told her I had got my dates exact and during the pregnancy the 19 week and 26 weeks ultrasounds I had showed she was going perfectly for the age. So stuffed if I know what happened, anyone else had this?????
Anyway what I want you guys to know is don't let the doctors scare you about 'big' babies and all that!! You all have enough to worry about with what to eat etc....

If you had GD (on insulin) in ur first pg, are you likely to get it again? as in, is it a pretty sure thing?
Thats pretty much the case. Each doctor I have seen during and since have warned me it is 98% certain I will have it in my next, due to the severity of it. But i am always one to look on the positive side and hopefully be more lucky next time round, even if that just means I have to finger pri-ck and check my sugar levels everyday, I just want to avoid insulin injections.:
Although, they were doing a trial on the pills (instead of insulin injections) at the Womens and Childrens where I had Maya, I didnt want to go on the trial as it seemed a bit uncertain to me and the risks were a bit of a worry. But my doctor said if the trial is successful I will be able to choose a pill instead of injections.
Has anyone gone on the pill trial???

I am happy to help any of you lovely ladies with GD - I have had it each pregnancy (three times) and was on insulin (two types) and am now pre-diabetic but under excellent control with diet.
It is hard to deal with sometimes, but, with advice from others, not impossible.

Hi everyone,
Well I had my Glucose test yesterday and today my Ob called me to say I needed to have a retest to see if I have GD. I am a little stressed about it as I wasn't expecting it.
I did have a steroid shot 4 weeks ago to mature the baby's lungs just in case I were to go in early labour due to a late miscarriage in 2005. This could give me a false read but Ob thinks that is a little too long to still be in my system. Could I have caused this due to having a sweet tooth for cordials and juices?
I am not allowed to eat anything from now but I was wondering if I could have water? If it is not one thing it's another.
Still a bit confused about the results.

im not too sure about your steriod shot but dont stress that this is anything you have done - i tried to control my gestational diabetes with diet but it didnt work (& i stuck to exactly what they told me) so am now on insulin & still getting used to keeping it under control - it is mainly the way the baby reacts with the pg hormones so having a sweet tooth (like i do) will just have to be put into moderation - good luck with your test

It sounds like you did the 1 hour test?????? seems your sugar level may have come back a little high so they would want to do the 2hour test where you have blood taken then have the glucose drink and sit for 2 hours then have your bloods taken after again. Are you having this today?
The cordials and juices don't have anything to do with it, I thought my love for soft drinks caused mine but the dietition and doctor said it just happens and is more likely to happen if relatives have had or has diabeties.In my case my Nan and also my sister and mum had GD, but funnily enough my other sister who has had two girls avoided it.

Ditto to what the other girls have told you.
The placenta plays havoc with your body while pregnant and family history does play a significant role. In my case, however, there was no family history but I do have polycystic ovaries which puts you at higher risk of GD and other diabetic conditions.
If I remember correctly, the steroid can affect your blood sugars for a day or so afterwards. I had the steroids with #2 and the ob warned my about the effect on blood sugars and my insulin dosage.
Good luck with your test! Hopefully it will all come back ok on the big test.
Well Just had the 2 hour test and I am now waiting on my results. It would be nice if I got them today so I can stop worrying.
Apparently yesterday's test was 9.5, god knows what that means????
I was so hungry by the end of it all. At the hospital they have a coffee shop and I was eyeing off this delicious choc muffin but thankfully my brain told me to stay away from the sugar. This is going to be so hard but I guess you get used to it and I will be a lot healthier for it.
My Ob doesn't seem very worried about it so I guess I should just wait and see.
I guess after struggling with fertility, then losing a baby and now thankfully reaching the 30 week milestone I guess you wonder what else!!!

You have gone through a lot of difficult obstacles to get where you are now! You must be estatic to be at this point, don't worry about the GD its nothing compared to the pain you have had in the past and finally to the beautiful baby thats on its way.
Just take each day as it comes and then the food and drink you have won't look so daunting, I noticed if I tried to plan the weeks meals ahead of time I would get stressed wondering how I could make sure they were satisfying, but if I just looked at that day or two it was a lot easier. I went to a health store for all my snacks, the people in my local store helped me so much and were able to show me what I could eat, there is even chocolate you can have!!
A really excellent book that you could look at is "The New Glucose Revolution". It has heaps of advice and recipes that would help you in meal planning. Also, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diets Books 1 and 2 are excellent for low GI eating.
Well I got a call from my OB and he said that the test after the 1st hour was 4.8 which was fine but after the 2nd hour it was 8.3 where they would really like to see it under 8.
He didn't seem overly concerned but did say I need to cut back on my sugar intake which includes fruit. I also need to try and get a bit more exercise as for the last 15 weeks I have done very little due to having a stitch of the cervix to prevent early delivery. He always said at 30 weeks I can begin to be a bit more mobile so I might try a little bit of swimming.
Since being told I have really tried to drink just water as I do have to admit I was probably drinking to much wasted sugar in cordials and soft drinks. Hopefully doing these things will help.

Sounds like you have been given great advice there.
Your bsl is only just over 8 so that's good - watching your diet and exercising will certainly help you out.
Just make sure that your maternal care provider keeps an eye on you and your bsl - it can change still....
