Hi Girls,
Just thought i would pop in and say hi, and thank you for all this information. I had my 1 hr test on Wednesday and have to go back next Wednesday for a re test as the results were abnormal. I must say i am a little frightened but will wait and see what the test comes up with before i really freak out!
I don't have any family history, I am not overweight, not over 30, wasn't a big baby myself etc.. so its a bit of a shock to me.
What stuck me the most was the fasting diet consists of SO much carbs, all i have really craved all pregnancy are carbs, i had pasta for lunch and dinner yesterday and then lunch today, i can't get enough of it, could this have had something to do with my results?
Thank you once again for you help!
x
Hi i had gd first diet controlled then on insulin but i just noticed you said you are eating a lot of carbs these would effect your sugar levels as our bodies turn them in to sugar I didn't have to cut then=m out completely you just swap white bread, pasta ,rice, to brown and eat plenty of fresh veg chicken and eggs and fruit except oranges and grapes only eat one orange or a small handful of grapes as there contain a lot of sugars also. by cutting them out completely you might start to get keytones which aren't good for the baby when your pregnant
Thanx Niamh75, I have my second test tomorrow, my first results were 11.3 after 1 hour, so I don't hold much hope that im not going to have it.....
Will let you know what happens...
XX
thats high sounds like you have it alright but dont worry its a bit of a pain having to stick to a diet while your pregnant but youll be fine let me know how you get on, best of luck
Niamh
Hi babushka doll
How did you get on with your test , hope every thing is going well
Niamh
Hi Niamh75 - I had my 2 hr GTT on Wednesday morning, results were delivered to my OB at 12.30pm yesterday but I still haven't heard anything :wall:
Im hoping no news is good news.....
I will post when I hear from him, its strange cos his secretarty told me that if it was positive they would send me to a specialist straight away, but they have sat on my results for 24hrs now! arghhhh
Thanks so much for thinking of me
Hey girls!
I'm the newest member of the club - I was diagnosed today.
I am just on diet changes and monitoring my BSL 6 times a day (eek!) for the moment, and will be on weekly visits to my GP as I'm doing shared care. I'm not sure how long they will monitor the condition before they decide whether or not I'll need insulin - I have a follow up appointment this Thursday, and I've written all my questions down so I don't forget!
Any advice/recipies etc would be great!!!!!
Ashlee xoxo
Hi Ladies,
I'm a bit new to this, so I thought I'd just ask about GD from some people who may be able to answer my questions.
I had my 1 hour test last week, not thinking that it would bring anything back, just had it offered via the Hospital and thought, better safe than sorry.
My result was 9.1, so now I am booked in for the 2 hr test this Thursday.
I've tried reading some of these threads, and think that anything over 8 is an issue, but I wasn't sure if 9.1 is high/something to worry about, or if this would just consist of a routine "double check".
Can anyone tell me the likely hood of this 9.1 turning out to be GD? Obviously they take these tests before and after I drink the stuff, and from others posts you can have a normal reading from the first blood test and then be over for the second blood test.
Does that mean that you have GD?
This is my second pregnancy and the only factor that I have that could contribute to this is that I'm 32. But from reading the Diabetes website I don't think it really seems to matter, it's all about how your body copes with the placenta's hormones and trying to produce a lot more glucose than normal.
I've noticed that I've been REALLY tired through this pregnancy and haven't really gotten over all of that, plus sleep badly/have insomnia. But as I also have PND/Aniexty I thought that would be more likely to be the cause of some of my symptoms.
Any advice would be great. I'm not particurlary stressed about it, but then read one post where you have to be monitored very closely, change your diet etc. Sounds like a lot of hard work!!!
Hi Tash,
For my initial GCT I had a reading of 9.6, so not overly higher than yours, and I have GD. My second reading for the GTT was 8.8. Anything over 8 is cause for concern - this is the bare maximum for someone without GD.
Good luck and I hope your GTT is under 8!
Hi Ashlee,
Thanks for that. BUGGER!!
Well, we'll just have to wait and see. Anything over 8 isn't good. Now I know what to look out for, thanks for that - I wouldn't have had a clue what figure was/wasn't what I want to see.
Will keep you posted after this week, I will know one way or the other.
Cheers,
Tash,
I was just over at 8.2 after my second test and am currently being monitored via diet. This is my second week of monitoring diet and so far, so good. I see the GD clinic on Friday and they will let me know if I have to go on insulin (I doubt it based on my results from monitoring). If you have GD, it's really not that bad as it seems. You just have to be a bit more careful about what you eat & when and fit in some more exercise. It has really kept my weight down over the past two weeks too. I lost 1 kilo in the first week of monitoring my diet.
Thanks for that Jools.
Geez 8.2 isn't that much over hey - what a bummer!!
I've spoken to the nurse this morning and she said that the GCT isn't that reliable these days and that most Dr.s go for the GTT first up as this is much more accurate.
I ate lunch before going for the test and asked her if that would have effected my results, but she said that it's hard to know, so that's why the fasting is the better test to do.
I will hopefully know by Monday and will keep you all posted.
It's good you said that your weight is OK on the new diet, as I was worried about that too. I've been trying to do a bit of exercise this pregnancy, but as I am always so tired, it's been hit and miss. I do preggie exercise classes on a Sat and I've tried riding my exercise bike a couple of times as my lower pelvic muscles ache when I try and walk around places for exercise.
So I'll have to grin and bare it, if I have GD!!
Speak soon.
hiya
well my midwife skipped the first GD test and put me on the fasting one. These are my results
Fasting 6.2
1 hour 8
2 hour 8.2
The midwife told me yesterday that yes i have GD and i am too see a dietriction (sp) this week as they will call me monday or tuesday for a appointment.
Its all confusing but i am gettin as much info as i can and will go from there.
angel
Angel,
The GD clinic will give you lots of information and you will probably go back in a weeks time so they can see how you are managing with the diet. I am still on diet monitoring (am 34 weeks pg) and I don't have to go back for another fortnight. Good luck.
hiya
i went to see them yesterday the dietitian and the diabetic Educatior. They said that i have to keep my levels below 5.5 for fasting and 6.5 2 hours after meal.
So i want to know where i am going wrong. for dinner last night i had; sweet patatoe mashed with 3t of riccotta, salad & a small piece of gravy beef grilled with parsley, salt, pepper. The whole meal was on a side plate so i dont over eat. Then i had a cup of tea. so i did my reading 2 hours later and it was 7.4.
then i had supper 3/4 cup of vanillia yogurt. this morning my fasting was 6.7.
so i have been over both times..
any suggestions.
angel
It could be the sweet potato - you may have eaten just a bit too much of it or otherwise it could have been what you ate for lunch, which has carried over IYKWIM. Did you have a snack btw lunch & dinner? Sometimes if you fast for too long you can then get a high reading, you should try to eat every 2-3 hrs. I would also try to do a walk after your meals to get your readings down. Sometimes I only go for 15-20 mins, slow/medium pace and this helps as it is burning sugar. I found also with yoghurt to watch which one you are having. Even if you are having low fat yoghurt, the sugar content can be really high. I have found the Valia brand really good.
If this is your first week, I wouldn't worry too much cos my GD dr said for the first couple of days she doesn't count it cos you are adjusting, but then your GD clinic sounds a bit more strict than mine. Good luck, a few of the others might have some good tips too.
hiya
thanks. i will keep that in mind with the sweet patatoe. I am not allowed to do exercise tho eg walking because i have siatica (sp) and doing physio for that at the moment. only allowed to do little bits and pieces then must rest. If i walk to much etc the siatica gets really bad.
i was under on the next test, so i was really happy about that.

Hi guys! I am new to this thread and don't even know if I have GD yet - my sugar levels on the first test were borderline so I have to do the GTT with the special "carbs galore" diet for three days before and all that bizzo. I know next to nothing about GD and am hoping to find out more. I will be reading but prob not posting much until I find out what is going on for sure. Any tips on how to get all that food in?
I have no idea - and I have GD  My biggest problem is eating when I am not hungry ... I just can't do it!!! I find the eating every 2-3 hours quite difficult, especially at work. But I am trying.
Hope your test goes well Sporty.
I am now finding it hard to eat all the time (am now 36 wks pg) but I suggest eating smaller for your main meals and you will probably be 'hungry' in a couple of hrs. With GD, best to 'graze' rather than eat big meals.
hiya
well on friday they put me on insulin... my fasting levels werent coming down. and i go to see them on friday this week and they might put me on another dose during the day.
can anyone tell me if they were induced because of GD and at how many weeks?
angel
i chose to have an elective c section cause my first baby was 5.1kgs & 58cms long - the dr wouldnt do it before 39 weeks as he said that gestional diabetic babies lungs take longer to develop so i guess it would be similiar for inducing
Hi guys!
I have good news - my results from the GTT were good - 6.4 after 1 hour, 4.8 after 2. So no worried about GD. So I guess I will be leaving you! Good luck to all the ladies dealing with GD and thanks for providing lots of info in this thread :D
Hi Guys,
Im hoping i won't be a regular in this thread. Went for my GCT last sat and its come back high so i have to go for the GTT this sat. Im a bit worried about the fasting part as i still suffer from all day sickness and it is worse if i am hungry. I had enough trouble getting through the 1 hour test after eating so who knows how i'll go in this one
Wish me luck it all comes back normal.
hi
misty...good luck
sportychick... thats great that you passed.
melbee... my second son was 10lb 6oz (4.8kgs) and i had him drug free.. my first son was 8lb 1oz and that labour was drug free.. i wasnt induced either so this is all new to me and i would rather that i wasnt induced. hence the questions about being induced. i dont want a c-section if i can help it because i have already had a big baby and i know i can handle it. if this baby was bigger then i might have a problem.

Hi all,
This is my first post. My GCT result has come back at 8.9, OB wants GTT done now. For anyone who hasn't already taken the GCT (which is unlikely in this forum) take note that my OB secretary told me for the first test that it didn't matter what I ate before hand. Having suffered Hyperemisis (spelling?!) and only having stopped vomitting 4 weeks ago (I'm now 31 weeks) I have found relief from nausea in chocolate bars, hot chocolate, sweet food. Soooooo, before my 12.30 test I had eaten Sultana Bran for breakfast, then a Twirl bar and 2 chocolate teddy bear biscuits at 11 o'clock. The guy taking my blood said "You ate what?!" He carrried on about how it will affect the result. Oh would have been good if someone had told me! I know it sounds dumb but that is why I asked if it mattered what I ate! So now I am stressing big time about having to fast all night and then not eating in the morning, that is the only way I don't vomit etc! I guess the other problem is being scared that I will test high and not be able to continue my horrid eating habits and end up vomiting etc again because of a specific diet. Can anyone tell me if 8.9 is likely to lead to GB? Tough question I know especially seeings I had all that choc. before the test! OB secretary tells me all I have to do this time is fast from midnight, show up early and do as they say. I had read that a three day diet of lots of carbs prior to GTT is meant to occur. My OB is too busy to talk to me!GRrrr. Hope you guys can help.... sorry for sounding like a moaning pregnant women, but that's what I am I guess. My first bub I had a GCT reading of 7 and had eaten an apple and cinnamon muffin about an hour before, unbeknowns to me that it could have raised the result too! But 7 was fine and nothing more happened back then. Fingers crossed that I can even make it through the test without vomitting the drink up.... I guess then it won't be valid and it will all have to be done again another day! Anyone seen The Pursuit of Happyness? That is my life.... just one thing after another with this preg. :(
Hi Brenda,
I went for my GTT on Saturday. When i booked in for it i was told to eat ceral for breakfast, something consisting of bread for lunch and something consisting of a potatoe, rice or pasta for dinner for the 3 days before the test. I tried to stay away from coke, ice-cream and chocolate during this time. Have my OB appointment tonight so fingers crossed it has come back normal and the only reason the GCT came back high was because of the huge sticky date pudding i had the night before. I worried too about throwing up after the drink too as i still suffer with morning sickness and if i dont eat im really sick, but i got through it just (there was about 10mins i thought i wasn't going to make it). Headed straight to maccas afterwards i was STARVING.
When do you go for your test? Good luck!
Well went to the OB last night and the results for the GTT hadn't come through yet :( I did however find out that my results for the GCT was 10.3....I've just gone back over this thread and by the look of things its probably not looking good is it?
Will hopefully get a call today to let me know what the results were.
 they stuffed up the GCT and this one comes back normal.
is gct the one where u drink the clear liquid and they finger ***** you on hour later??? ive had that twice now ( first time i drank a coke and had some smarties and the midwife was nice to me and said we would try again result was 8.8) so i went back this time all i had was toast with vegemite and some water and the result was 8.9 no idea how that happened??? so yeah now i have to book in for gtt not looking too good :(
hi everyone
thought I would join this thread as yesterday I was rung by the Mercy to be told I have gestational diabetes, which has even shocked the midwives, as I have always had a low blood sugar problem :(
I have an information session on the 16th and have to get a blood sugar meter to take with me......
feeling a whole mixed bag at the moment about it as I feel I have eaten better this pregancy than any of my previous ones so its all a bit confusing at the moment
hiya
i am at the mercy as well.. i have GD and on insulin as well.... hope it goes ok
angel
Hoping I might be able to join in this thread ladies, as today Ive been told I have GD. I have an appointment with a specialist next wednesday to get all the info but assume I will be at least monitoring my BSL and adjusting my diet as a minimum.
I've learnt alot from this thread and look forward to the support and friendship whilst we endure GD together.
Cheers
Cindy

Hi joels girl. You are due the day after me. I also have GD. I am currently monitoring my BSL. I have so far cut out all sweet things and am following the carbo serving sizes and trying to pick low g.i alternatives but I am still going over the recommended levels. I have an appointment next wednesday too.
Come over and join the September belly buddies if you like - they are very friendly and supportive (and chatty) ladies.
thought I'd update you - my education session went ok although there is some confusing information around.....I think I can say I'm not alone in that most people think to control diabetes, you need to cut out all sugar, whereas the dietician, etc yesterday said its more about the GI - its a bit confusing!
To make matters worse, my hubby is pretty much putting his fingers in his ears and doesn't want to hear about it! He's been pretty good until now with my pregnancy but he told me last night it was all I was talking about! Hello!! Its a lifestyle change and potential long term problems, which is the scariest thing for me
Was also told my chances of having my hoped-for VBAC as now 50/50
How did everyone else deal with a partner who doesn't accept or want to know about yr GD???
MrsD72, I can understand how annoying it must be for you with a DH that refuses to talk about it with you. I know that it is a constant matter of conversation at my house because it is always on my mind. I started the insulin yesterday, DH has been very good. He even asks questions and listens to my chatter (as long as he doesn't have to see the actual finger *****s or injecting)
Hi Ladies.
I have been to the Dr today (actually for a cold) but she tested my urine and everything else anyways just to see ow things were going...
My blood pressure has risen from 125/65 to 165/95 in a week and there is what she classes as "moderate levels" of sugar in my urine. She has booked me in for a GTT test next Monday and I'm a little scared... ok not scared... TERRIFIED! I know I haven't been diagnosed yet, but I am overweight and fear it will be confirmed on Monday.
I'm hoping I'll be able to sponge information out of you all... and ease my fears...
I know this may be a little pre-emptive, but if you are insulin dependant, does that mean injections or are there tablets for this yet?? I totally admire anyone who can inject insulin themselves but don't think I would ever have the courage to do this myself.
Can you fight it, I mean with diet and exercise, can you make it go away?? Or is it always there??
Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi there. I am not an expert on this by any means, but I can tell you what I know.
If your GTT comes back positive, you will most likely be given a blood sugar monitor for a week or two, and refered to a dietitian who will let you know what foods you should be eating. The lady I spoke to suggested 3-4 serves of carbohydrates for breakfast, lunch and dinner and 1-2 servings for morning/afternoon tea and supper. It is recommended that you choose the low GI alternatives as they are slower to digest and don't spike your blood sugar as much. A serving is 15g, you can figure it out off the info on the pack.
If you have it, it is there for the rest of the pregnancy. You can't make it go away but a lot of people can control it with a change in diet and more exercise. You will also be at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
Some people can't control it with diet alone. I reduced my carb intake to only one serve per meal and still went too high on my after meal sugar readings. I have just started on insulin. It is an injection. There are pills available for type 2 control, but are not recommended in pregnancy but I don't know why. The actual injection isn't too bad. It actually hurts less than the finger *****s for monitoring. It is only a tiny thin needle, about 1 1/2cm long. It does take a bit of courage to put it in though.
Hope that was helpful, if anyone finds anything is incorrect then please post a correction. This is all new to me too.
Goodluck with your test on monday, hopefully all is well.
