Yeah Port is still 2.5 hrs north of here. That's where my in laws live. I love it there !

Anyways......Bronwyn highly recommended one of the girls she listed as being a very 'strong' doula. Sounds good to me. I just want to know where I stand with my Ob first before I call her.

Good Luck with your training Trish

JG - when you speak to the two doulas, can you ask them to email me so I can add them to the doula list I have? I have been getting heaps of requests for doulas around Newcastle!

I think doulas are handy to have anyway, even if you get through to your Ob, but if she is willing to do things without your consent now, do you think that will change at birth? I think it's going to be great to have that advocate to make sure it all goes smoothly and so you remain in control during your time of vulnerability... x

Will do Kelly. A have their first names as Danielle (central coast based)and Sonya (newcastle based).

I take your point on board and hope one of them is available to assist me thru the birth - whenever it should happen.

    Thanks x x

    Hi

Thought I would just let you know what happened to me, I had GD (injections 3 times a day) and needed to be induced at 39weeks 5 days due to sugars going a little high and low.

Anyway I had to have two different lines hooked up to me while in labour, 1 incase my sugar levels rised during birth and 1 for lower sugar levels. Has this been discussed with you?? Also has your GD specialist outlined all the risks etc regarding GD as I am a little concerned that you mentioned home birth.

I suppose it all comes down to how bad your GD is as well.

    Chon,

No the details of how my OB proposes to induce me have been limited to say the least. In relation to the insulin, she told me not to have the injection the night before attending hospital, that my BSL would then be monitored by staff, I could have a light breakfast and the baby would be here before lunch so my levels should return to normal shortly after - but will continued to be monitored just in case.

My GD specialist told me yesterday that my GD was under control and managable. In his opinion he saw no reason for the induction !!

The home birth is probably not an option at this late stage.......

Any additional advice re:GD and it's possible complications are welcome Chon - thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it.

    Cindy

I had an appointment yesterday with the head of diabetic obstetrics and the diabetic consultant. Both were concerned about the high amount of insulin that I am on. It makes it more likely that the placenta will begin to fail earlier. The Dr wanted to induce mid next week, but we compromised and now I will have CTG's on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and be induced on the 9/9 at 39+4 weeks. I will go into hospital that day, have the gels inserted and see how it goes overnight. Your Ob is being really harsh, I hope that she listens to some reason.

At this stage they have just said they would monitor my sugar levels during labour, nothing has been said about being hooked up to anything.

That's great news Artechim. That sounds really reasonable. Hope the monitoring goes well for you dear..............Finger crossed.

Hope I can negotiate something similar later today.........I'm a bit apprehensive about calling the OB but it is something I really need to do so I just need to pump up......!

    Hi

Its good to hear you have kept them under control. Both my doctor and specialist said there is no need to induce if I could keep my sugars in control but alas it wasnt the case near the end. You can so no to induction if your baby is fine, but they still don't like to go over 40 weeks if possible, it used to be 38 weeks.

Have they done a scan to see how big bubs is lately? as that can also bring on an induction. There is the risk of jaundice and babys body temperature being low when they are born. My DD had both and was wrapped up like I have never seen before, she must of had 3 blankets around her when they popped her on my chest, she was then whisked away in a special crib to get her body temp back up. I didnt have her in my room for 6 hours after birth, that wasnt nice at all. I cried as it wasnt what I was expecting, I always saw myself going to my room with my bub in tow. But I wanted what was best for her, of course, and was able to visit her in her crib before going to my room. Her jaundice was only minor so she was able to get over this herself and having as much breast milk as I could give her.

I think I did my last insulin the night before then in the morning it was just testing. The midwife did this while I was in labour every two hours and then after I had my DD I tested for 24 hours after each meal. My GD was gone immediately! That was amazing, I had a big turkey salad roll which would normally had sent my levels over the roof, but nothing, absolutely normal.

To tell you the truth near the end of my pregnancy I just wanted her out as I was quite aware of risks involved by having her in me. I didnt like the fact that everything that went in my mouth affected her so much, but then as I was doing everything right and my sugars were still going up I was quite afraid for her. When the doctor said he wanted to induce the next day I was relieved.

I had a good induction, my waters were broken at 8.30am and she arrived at 2.15pm that day. That was fine with me as I can't imagine how some of these ladies in here go through labour hours on end, I really praise them.

Anyway keep up the good work with your insulin and what goes in your mouth, you are doing well.

I phoned my OB this morning. Well got as far as the receptionist......

Can't get an appointment before next tuesday (when she proposes to do internal) and admit me to hospital. She's fully booked for 3 weeks.

Asked for her to call me to discuss some issues /enquiries I have about induction - the response was 'I'm not sure when she'll get the chance she's very busy. Shes in a conference later today...blah blah blah...........it might be tomorrow or Monday, is that alright ?????

So I guess I just wait and if I don't get my satisifactory answers (or even the chance to express them !) in time then she has no-one else to blame if I inconvenience her or the hosptial for not going ahead with the proposed induction due to my issues not being address in time.

Geez why is this SO hard......

JG I would be ringing back and stressing that you MUST see her tomorrow, you can come in early or late in the day if it's going to be easier for her to see you then but it's of utmost importance. Keep ringing back every hour or so until they confirm an appt time. I used to work as a medical receptionist and trust me this strategy will work. Repeat each time you ring that it's URGENT and IMPORTANT. Good luck.

OMG I can't believe it ...............She called back........ had a brief chat and she didn't even put up an argument. She said I don't have to be induced if I don't want to and would cancel the booking straight away. She would see me as planned next tuesday and let nature takes it's cause.

OMG.............OMG................Can't believe it was THAT easy. I got myself in a flap for no reason. This certainly was not the impression she gave me the other day. I think it was because I said that the GD specialist did not believe there was reason to induce.

I sooooo happy, I've been jumping around the house like a child at christmas.

Yeah I get my natural birth after all...........I know I can do it and look forward to the overwhelming feeling of pride and satisifcation I will have when it' s over.

Thanks to all for your support during the last few days. It really made the difference. Even Joel said, "Well you were right again", he was so expecting there to be a good reason to be induced. When will he learn that women know their bodies better than any doctor could...........
