Another flute player...played from 10 until just before I had dd, so 15 years. I want to keep it up but can't afford lessons and feel a bit stagnant (I have only played classical music).
I would love to play piano, but don't have a keyboard. My whole family are musical and dh's family are too...dh is the least inclined to play an instrument but learnt trumpet and piano as a child.
Em I would LOVE to play French horn!!

You should! I haven't played for quite a few years so I'd be a bit rusty I imagine, and the valves are broken in my french horn and I'm guessing they'll be expensive to replace. I stopped playing french horn in year 10 at school and played flute instead because at the time I was the only one playing french horn and I hated the pressure put on me plus the music teacher kept putting solo's in band pieces for me!

Well first lesson went pretty well - had a lot of fun and found it a fair bit easier than I thought it'd be. Apparently despite not having touched anything music related (I don't count singing along to the radio in the car here) since school I remembered a fair bit.
Has anyone got any good recommendations for websites for a total beginner to look at to help with practice etc?

Great news about the lesson. What kind of things were you thinking of? Songs/sheet music, or actual instructions? YouTube has heaps of lesson based stuff, otherwise I have downloaded free music before at www (dot) 8notes (dotcom forward slash) flute

A little from column A, little from column B I think - just looking at some extra info, remembering how to read music (I used to be able to, but have forgotten huge amounts) that type of thing.

Total music nerd here (was the school music capt and even had 'band geek' on the back of my year 12 hoodie lol...I play the clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar and bass, DH is a semi professional muso and plays guitar and sings. Between us we own a clarinet, 5 guitars, a bass, drumkit, various noisy bongos/djembes etc, a trumpet, organ, piano and a nice little home studio. So DS has plenty to choose from, he better not come home in a few years and want to play the cello!

Not me personally (I danced) Hubby plays piano and is in a Big Band. he can also play Guitar, Sax and Drums. DD has been brought up with him playing and we listen to a lot of Jazz. If that influences her great if not so be it ... she'll prolly be a sporty girl rather than an arts girl

i was a pianists in my previous life BK- use to teach it as well- studied it a uni etc
also saxophone, clarinet, guitar and recorder
also could play most instruments if you show me the basics as well
lol at band camps- i used to run them lol
nothing american pie happened that i knew of - but then again they were primary aged kids

Tenor sax here. Year seven I was given the trumpet after I fluked a sound and then never made another, so I went on to clarinet and then to the sax. I love the sax. Went to band camp too, and was the best! I even won the highest award for music that was offered at my school (yeah, brag moment there!!!!!). But sadly, we couldn't afford my own, so the hire of it came to an end when I finished school.
So a couple of years back I went and bought an alto sax.....and was so bad and rusty at playing it that I was too embarrassed to play it when anyone was around, therefore it didn't get used. I sold it last year.

I play DH's wallet! It makes a lovely 'ch-ching' sound when there are nice shoes on sale!!!! hahahaah
In all seriousness, no, is my answer. I'm in awe of people playing an instrument. It's like people who know another language to me. Best of luck with it!! Sounds awesome!

I play the tenor and descant recorders although they haven't come out since DS appeared outside, and I sing - both DH and I are in the same church band so it makes it a little hard to run around chasing DS while practising. DH plays the drums and DS is obsessed (or very nearly) with DH's drumsticks. DH can't play/practise drums at church easily as DS has to get in on the action as wellWe figure DS is a drummer in training (at 19mths) as he can sort of keep a reasonable beat and has even managed to drum with crossed arms/sticks. We inflicted ourselves with a toy wooden drum for Christmas and he's just scored a second hand drum set toy thing with 2 drumsticks of his own - DH doesn't have to hide his drumsticks anymore, although DS has mangled and broken off the rods in DH's wooden multirod sticks (he has a set of nylon multirods).
