Yup thought so.
Time to rearrange the lounge again. Sick of the toy mess anyway so I'm moving it into the end room and she can bring out one sort of toy at a time. Then pack it up and bring out the next stuff. Been trying to convince her and dh to do this anyway but with everything in the lounge it doesn't work.

The girls lego has all been miced into the toy room, hate having the toys all in the lounge so outlawed it.... Lol. They still find their way in!
Just wondering how you sort/store your Lego. Does each set get stored separately (in the original box?) or does it all just get jumbled together? Do you sort/store according to size? I'm thinking they need to be kept separately so DS can find the pieces he needs to make stuff easily, but how do you police that? And, if its all together, doesn't that help with creative play? It's doing my head in trying to figure out what to do!! :wall:
At the moment, each of our sets is in its own container. We have a container with mixed Lego in it, for random stuff, but when I get "mummy can you make x set up really quickly" I like to know all the bits are there!
I think that will change when she is older and following instructions is a little less stressful, but for now, limiting the pool of pieces for her while she is following instructions is helping us.
It does make for an awful lot of containers though! :)
That's my thought too - a big container for general stuff, and each set separate....looks like those plastic food containers DH bought this week will have another use ;)
DS has only played with duplo & the bigger mega bloks. We have done what BG has done. We have random stuff in a big container but sets have been kept in their original box. While the box lasted... Once the box has been destroyed, it gets added to the random stuff. I try to encourage the kids to put their own toys away. I don't expect them to separate the sets. I try to help by telling them which piece goes in which box but not stressing too much and sorting it out later. At 4 & 2 it's a bit too much to expect them to sort them into proper boxes. Having said that though, I just got it all out & tried to put it together for DD and found I forgot to sort it all out lol. It was pretty well done though. Only a few pieces were mixed up. The OCD part of me felt a bit anxious at finding mega bloks mixed in with the duplo :redface:. I'm trying to get over that lol.
I have two storage drawers under DS's bed. At the moment, they have MCNs in them but I will be moving them soon to make way for lego.
Right now, DD is playing with the Thomas the Tank Engine mega bloks sets.
I have found, that dd is almost as OCD as me with keeping things sorted. When it comes time to out things away she will bring over the pieces of each set and sit with me to pull them apart. She was a bit over 4 when we started playing with Lego, so obviously that extra bit of age helped a bit. And inheriting my neeeeeed for organisation lol. I think us praising her for using the brick separator has helped a bit. She gets really excited to pull things apart and put them away cos she can use the separator (and "mummy, I have to help you cos daddy doesn't know how to use this, I'm so clever!"). She likes to be able to put the sets away in their right place too. She asks me every time she gets a new set if she can help me find a home for it.
We use the sistema snap close containers. They are more exxy than some other brands, but they seal well. We had the random Lego on a different container and my 13yo niece managed to drop it. More than once. On wood floors. Noisy! And 1600 pieces makes a damn big mess! So we decided it was better to have proper seals. Dd can drop them without Lego bits going everywhere! Thankfully Coles have had them on sale recently so we've picked up the more commonly use ones relatively inexpensively. Have a stash of spare ones hanging about because of them being cheap. May have say back thinking "ok, she's getting x sets for Christmas, what containers will we need) and trying to make sure we had enough sitting here. Lol. May need to get another 5 or 7L container for her as she is getting a couple of big sets. But I'll have to wait too she gets them to work out exactly how big she needs them.
BG - yeah, it was the systematic stuff DH came home with this week too. Can DD get the lids off by herself?
And, Rowellen, it'll be the two MCN drawers under DS's bed that will get emptied for Lego I think! I would not handle Mega Blocks and Duplo together either *shudder* i think thats part of the reason I'll NEED to have the Lego separate... Gotta love all our quirks!
yeah DD has no drama with getting the lids off - occassionally she has trouble getting them to snap locked properly - but it might be one point on a lid that has four - so it's still on enough.
i'll grab a pic of our storage for the lego and post in a little bit - we recently purchased an ikea bookshelf, so the older (much smaller, and sadly inadequate) bookshelf i had as a kidlet has become our lego storage - it's not perfect (i have to stack stuff up so it's not 100% accessible immediately), but it's NEAT, and it's organised enough. i have the books sorted out and each container has a single set with it's set number and a way to identify where the book is. i've also printed all the extra stuff from the lego site that is relevant to what we have, and put it in folders (i could just download to ipad and put it in kindle BUT i don't want dd to have that much access to the ipad, or to associate ipad and lego as being something that go together)

Top shelf has containers with books in them. Have up on folders with plastic pockets. The books aren't set size so it doesn't work for us. Folders have the printed stuff (white boxes are

The big gap on the second shelf is where the generic Lego lives. It's all out in the lounge at the moment
Half the bottom shelf is empty containers at the moment. But I know she is getting Lego at Christmas. There are a few divided containers that we grabbed from bunnings. They are fantastic for sitting sets before putting big things together. I out the boat together last week without sorting stuff first and I swear it took me an hour longer than it should have lol
Wow BG you are organised! I have a bookshelf exactly like that in the back room. ATM it's storage for DD's clothes as there is too much other crap in the cupboard and I just don't have the time to go through it just yet. Especially as the kids can't be around as it has heaps of xmas presents in it. I love those containers. DS can open them easily. DD can open them too but sometimes needs help.
This is ours at the moment:

1x clear tub with dividers, sorted into thick or single line bricks
1x tool box with removable tubs (was DP's) and we sort each small thing (lights, animals, clothes, flats) into different spots
1x cheap desktop drawer, has booklets, small boards & barbies big pieces.
Only just set this up with an old coffee table in the toy room.
I WILL be changing this and will be looking at binning a for different tubs with divider options to sort by color or size.
Anyone else suddenly getting the Mr Toys Toyworld ad on top of the screen, with Lego ads on it? lol
What else to do while the hubby watches the footy than to check out the half price specials (can do it cos i know i don't have any spare money this week so won't impulse buy hahahahah) - they do have a smurfs advent calendar (mega bloks) for $20 instead of $50, if anyone is interested...

it's very rare to get lego cheap cheap. Lego Australia have minimum prices they sell to their retailers. the likes of kmart and bigw will sometimes have a big item (at the moment, the boat) at less than cost price, and use it to entice people in, and then sell the rest at a bigger margin. means small places (like toyworld etc) just can't compete

I know of at least 1 more lego coming miss A's way now so at the moment it's at least 10 and possibly 2 more from SIL but not sure if they are x-mas or b'day & I know mum has some for x-mas... Lol!
