    You need to sand it back so that it is all uniform. If there is stain left your finish probably won't be even.

    Your final product will only be as good as your preparation so it is worth taking the time to sand it properly.

    ETA - make sure you wear a mask when you're sanding. They put some crazy chemicals in paints and varnishes and you don't want to breathe them in with a baby on board.
