    the war museum has some kid interaction areas these days that allows them to play in and show the kids what it was like for those in the war eg (inside of submarine, inside the trenches, a helicpoter etc..... from memory its downstairs and kept our kids busy for a while - not a whole day thing - we had a three year old, one year old and 8 year old and all were happy.

    questacon has a baby/little kids zone as well as all the other floors. Again our almost 4 and 1 year old loved the place even though a lot was over their heads from a science point of view - the fact they could touch and watch and play kept them happy for a fair while.

    scope out wotif for accommodation - i just had a quick look - you can get a couple of places in ACT for around 100 or maybe 90 out at queanbeyan. at such a small difference, and potentially a fair bit extra travel, i'd be going the canberra option...
