I would go.

We have driven Adelaide to Melbourne a few times. 8hr trip. 2 days before we left the first time our starter motor blew. Had a mechanic out a midnight fixing it. 2 days before we left on our next trip there my husband was in a car accident and we had to hire a hire car to go cost us a fortune, but we did it.

So we had great excuses to not go, but we went anyway.

We feel obligated. We might have actually booked the sea world gig knowing about the naming day...

I think we are going. So that eliminates stay at home option. Fly, drive. Fly, drive. Hmm.

Flying is easier - but I've just looked at flights and they are minimum $99 at the moment. Starting price. So we're looking at at least $600. Boo.

Driving will cost you at least as much in fuel and driving accessories. But, I would still say do it. Do it over two days, stop somewhere nice along the way, and split it into two 6 hour driving days, then split each of those into 3 two-hour shifts, and stop at a park in between to have a little picnic lunch, let the kids run around and burn off some energy.

My SIL, as much as I can't stand her, never comes up to visit and it really upsets me. We go down to them at least three times a year over the last four years. She has managed two trips, only one with one of her kids, and one which was a holiday for herself to the Gold Coast. We hired a car and went down to meet her. So I do think you need to put the effort in somewhere. If not for the naming day, then for some other event, or at another time that suits you.

PacRak came up with an option 6 - leave the kids with my parents and sister/BIL and then me and DH go up on our own for a weekend away

We could fly at whatever time, whatever the cheapest flight is, get the train down from Syd... So much easier. Hmm!!!!
