Has it been long since you've gone? I was under the same impression as well, if a city has a rule for chewing gum, I figured it should be okay.
I'm only a little concerned about the traffic, I don't know what its like, if its busy etc that way I know how much time to allow. Once I get the hotel booked, the first thing I'd do is make sure that trip is out of the way. It would lovely to see the city that way too.
I have spent a bit of time at Singapore airport, if you're going to be stuck at an airport, I'm glad I was stuck there.
I'm not sure if things have changed in the last few years but last time I was there they had special tours of the city that left from the airport, you don't get off the bus so you don't have to go through customs. Also there is a pool there so pack swimmers if you end up having some time hanging around the airport.
I was stuck there for 27hrs, was so glad that there were movies playing, and there are great facilities for having a shower and freshening up, you pay for it but they supply towels etc.
I had an 8 hour stopover on another trip and went to the electronics shopping centre. I had enough time to have a good look around and get back again, it definitely went quicker than I thought though, maybe someone else will have an idea of travelling times to the mosque that might help.
I was going to go to the night zoo too but I figured I'd play it safe and stay out during the day as its not too close to the airport from what I've looked at - I'm excited and nervous, its only a total 9hr stopover but I'd like to play it safe for 7 hours! Having the two kids with me wasn't a worry until my family made it one. GRRR.
I don't mind being stuck at the airport but I'd like to get a chance to get out to the mosque area if possible. Thanks for the well wishes Sarebear
